Ithaca, NY – The SUNY Brockport football team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to #16 Ithaca on the road, 24-0. Brockport moves to 1-1 on the year, while the nationally ranked Bombers improve to 2-0.
The Golden Eagles outgained Ithaca on the ground and through the air, with 66 rushing yards and 200 passing yards. They gained a grand total of 266 yards, while the defense held Ithaca to 243 yards of total offense. However, the squad committed two turnovers (1 interception, 1 fumble), one of which led to a quick score for the opponent's offense in the first quarter.
By the time the second half and fourth quarters came around Brockport had fallen behind, needing a few big plays to get back into the game. The offensive unit was halted on several fourth down conversion attempts, as the Bombers proved to be up to the task.
Aidan Thomas led the defense with six total tackles, one for a loss, half of a sack, and a quarterback hurry.
Ben Marshall and
Ben Robinson both had five tackles and credit for half of a tackle for a loss. Up front
Jordan Harris recorded 1.5 tackles for a loss, 0.5 sacks, and a total of four tackles.
In the secondary,
Giovanni Frisenda came up with two pass breakups on the day. Frisenda also got in on two tackles, while
Malik Kelly was involved in three stops. Kelly also had a pass breakup, matching one stop in the pass game that
Dawin Fanor recorded as well.
Todd Simonds racked up 200-yards on 22-for-45 passing in the game. He was sacked three times and had one pass intercepted. Five different receivers caught three or more passes on the day.
Louis Usera had a solid day, leading the team with five receptions for 65 yards.
Firmino Benros had three catches for 42 yards and
Jared Maurino had four receptions to rack up 27 yards.
The Golden Eagles stayed committed to the ground game, rushing the ball 33 times.
Rashad Law got most of the touches in the backfield, finishing with 56 yards on 22 carries.
Todd Simonds kept it himself for 10 rushes for nine yards.
Dan Giangrasso had five opportunities to punt the ball against Ithaca, averaging 40.6 yards per punt. He booted a long of 47 yards for the game and pinned the opposing team inside its own 20 yard line once.
Todd Simonds contributed with two effective pooch punts, registering a touchback and one punt inside the 20.
On the other side of special teams,
Derrick Chance had two return opportunities on the punt team. With a long of 28 yards on the day, Chance totaled 31 yards on two punt returns.
Purcelle Brown ran for a long of 22 yards on the kickoff return for Brockport, as he totaled 86 yards on five returns.
Ithaca got the scoring started early in the contest, knocking through a 23-yard field goal around the 10-minute mark. A couple of minutes later the Bombers made it a 10-0 game after a 34-yard touchdown pass. They went on to score another touchdown through the air in the opening quarter to go up 17-0.
After a scoreless second quarter, the score remained at 17-0 going into the halftime break. Ithaca went on to score another touchdown through the air, to give the Bombers a 24-0 lead. Unable to find the endzone, Brockport took a tough loss on the road.
The Golden Eagles will now turn the page to begin preparations for their week three matchup with the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets. They head over to Edwin Fauver Stadium in Rochester, NY for a 12pm start next weekend on Saturday, September 17
th.
