Men's Soccer Hosts Geneseo Ahead of Trip to Potsdam

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's soccer team will close out the regular season this week with two more conference matchups. First is a 7pm game at home against Geneseo on Wednesday and then comes the regular season finale at Potsdam on Saturday at 1pm.

Last Week's Recap: Remaining unbeaten in conference play, Brockport went 1-0-1 in a pair of SUNYAC clashes last week on the road. The team first traveled to take on Fredonia, scoring three points in the standings with a 3-0 victory. Then in a hard-fought 90 minutes against No. 11 Cortland, Brockport added another point thanks to a 1-1 draw on the road. The Golden Eagles are now 7-2-5 overall and are still without a loss in the SUNYAC at 4-0-3.

Looking at the SUNYAC: Only one team has clinched a spot in the postseason so far, as Cortland sits in first place in the SUNYAC heading into the week. Here is the full listing of the current conference standings ahead of Wednesday's slate of games:

  1. Cortland (5-1-1, clinched)
  2. Brockport (4-0-3)
  3. Oneonta (5-2-0)
  4. New Paltz (3-1-3)
  5. Buffalo State (4-3)
  6. Geneseo (3-3-1)
  7. Plattsburgh (2-2-3)
  8. Oswego (1-2-4)
  9. Fredonia (1-6-1, eliminated)
  10. Potsdam (0-8-0, eliminated)

Recent Scorers: The Golden Eagles scored four goals last week with assists coming on each play. Josh Fitzpatrick netted a pair of goals in the win over Fredonia, receiving assists from Giovanni Cardona and Russ Domm. Sean Lee got help from Max Voyer for a goal in that game as well. Lee then assisted Andy Cespedes on a score in a draw against nationally-ranked Cortland.

Back in Net: Andrew Taylor has been the starter in net for 13 of the 14 games this season for the Green and Gold. Brockport's goalie has made 55 saves, allowed 12 goals, and owns a .821 save percentage. Taylor ranks third in the SUNYAC in save percentage, third in total saves, fourth in goals against average (0.92), and tied for second with five clean sheets.

Geneseo Matchup: The Knights come to Brockport on Wednesday with a 0-4-1 record on the road this season. Overall, Geneseo is 7-5-3 with a 3-3-1 mark against conference foes. Recently the team has gone three matches without a loss, including wins over Potsdam (4-1) and the nationally-ranked Cortland Red Dragons (2-1). In the last meeting between Geneseo and Brockport, ghe two programs played to a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes of action in the opening round of the 2022 conference tournament. The Golden Eagles advanced to the SUNYAC Semifinals after winning via penalty shootout, 5-4.

Against Potsdam: The Potsdam Bears are one of two teams that have already been removed from postseason contention, as they hold an 0-8 mark in the SUNYAC and are 3-9-1 overall. They have lost nine games in a row heading into this week. Last year Brockport defeated Potsdam, 3-1, to claim a sixth straight win over the Bears.

Postseason Approaching: With the regular season coming to a close, the Golden Eagles look to clinch a spot in the upcoming conference tournament. The SUNYAC Tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday, October 28th.
