Geneseo, NY – The SUNY Brockport volleyball team lost a close, 3-2, battle against the Geneseo Knights Wednesday night on the road. The Golden Eagles move to 9-10 overall on the season and 5-2 in the SUNYAC.
Brockport took the first set of the match, 25-16, with the largest margin of victory on the night as the rest of the match was tightly contested. The Green and Gold edged out a win in the second set, 26-24, to go up 2-0 in the match.
Geneseo then turned the score around in the third set, sneaking away with a 26-24 win to prevent the sweep. The next set went the Knights way as well, evening the match score at 2-2 with a 25-22 win in the fourth. They would complete the 3-2 comeback victory, with a 15-10 effort in the fifth.
The Green and Gold held the advantage as a team in points (81-70), kills (61-46), assists (55-42), and digs (77-62). The Knights won the battle in the middle with an 11-7 edge in blocks and they benefitted from committing just 19 errors to Brockport's 33.
Alenna Williamson had a big night for the Golden Eagles, notching a career-high 18 kills on 28 attempts for a .607 hitting percentage. Williamson also helped the team with three block assists from her spot in the middle of the floor.
Emma Schumaker and
Jordan Thompson finished the match with 17 and 15 kills respectively. Thompson led the team with 22.5 total points, as she added five aces, three blocks (2 solo, 1 assisted), and 12 digs to her stat line.
With 45 assists in the match,
Kaitlyn Jewett was one shy of tying her career-high. Brockport's setter also chipped in with three aces, a solo block, and a team-high 16 digs.
Brooklyn Sullivan and
Elsie Logan logged 14 assists each defensively.
The Golden Eagles now turn their attention to the North Country Challenge coming up this weekend, hosted by St. Lawrence and Clarkson. They begin a 3-match slate on Friday night at 7pm against St. Lawrence.
