Brockport, NY – As the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC, the Golden Eagle men's soccer team will be hosting No. 3 seed Oneonta in the SUNYAC Semifinals. The match is scheduled to begin at 3pm on Brockport's home turf.
Catch the Doubleheader: The men's soccer team hosts the semifinal match at 3pm and right after that is the women's semifinal match at 6pm. Admission prices are $5 for adults, $3 for children, and free for SUNYAC students with student IDs. Guess Who's Back: For back-to-back season, the Golden Eagles are back in the SUNYAC Semifinals. They have now made a semifinal run in the postseason in three of the last five seasons. In the 2022 SUNYAC Tournament, the Green and Gold took down top-seeded Cortland on the road, 3-2, in the semis. Brockport looks to get back into the SUNYAC Championship game for a second year in a row.
First Round Bye: The No. 1 & 2 seeds in the SUNYAC Tournament earned first round byes to go with hosting rights for the semifinal rounds. Both Cortland and Brockport secured spots straight through the semis after locking up the top two seeds in the standings. This will be the first time Brockport has hosted the semifinal game since 2015.
Last Week's Poll: On October 24
th's United Soccer Coaches national poll, Brockport cracked the Top-25 at 20
th in the nation. Previously unranked on the nation scale, the squad also jumped up to second in the regional rankings. At 9-2-5 overall and 6-0-3, the Golden Eagles are 1-1-1 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.
Postseason History: In the long history of SUNYAC men's soccer Brockport (11) and Oneonta (12) are two of just three programs with more than 10 conference titles. While the Red Dragons have won two of the last three SUNYAC Championships, Brockport last took the title in 2018. Head Coach
Gary LaPietra has won two conference championships in his successful coaching career at Brockport. In the 2022 postseason, the squad pulled out a shootout win in the first round over Geneseo (5-4). Then Brockport upset the top-seed Cortland, 3-2, with a late score. The run was halted by Oneonta in the SUNYAC Finals, going to a shootout once again (2-1).
Winning Trends: Since a pair of losses on September 8
th and 9
th, the Green and Gold have gone without a loss. This includes going undefeated at 6-0-3 against conference opponents. The team also finished the regular season undefeated at home, going 3-0-4 on the home turf. The Golden Eagles are trending upwards at the right time of the season.
Outstanding October: Brockport has gone 11 games without a loss, and had an undefeated month of October at 4-0-2. The month began with a bang as the squad defeated Houghton, 4-0. Then a 0-0 draw with New Paltz was followed up by a 3-0 shutout of Fredonia. The second tie of October was a 1-1 draw with No. 11 Cortland. In order to lock up the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament, the Golden Eagles ended the regular season with wins over Geneseo (2-0) and Potsdam (4-1).
Against Oneonta: Back on September 30
th, the Golden Eagles handed Oneonta its first loss of the season, 1-0. Heading into the game, the Red Dragons were No. 6 in the nation with a record of 9-0. With less than a minute to play,
Russ Domm was assisted by
Giovanni Cardona on the game-winner. Brockport also defeated a No. 16 ranked Oneonta, 2-0, last year in the regular season. However, Oneonta is the reigning SUNYAC Champion after defeating the Green and Gold in penalty kicks (2-1) in 2022.
Scouting the Red Dragons: In last week's national poll the Oneonta Red Dragons came in at No. 22. They defeated Geneseo over the weekend in the opening round of the conference tournament, 2-1. Oneonta is 13-2-3 overall now this season and finished 5-2-2 in the SUNYAC. The team is led by a pair of 18-point scorers in #17 Luigi Prosperi and #30 Ali Somow. Prosperi has nine goals, while Somow has six goals and six assists. Goalie #45 Nate Hannah owns a .808 saves percentage and allowed just 10 goals in 16 starts. He has made 42 saves and has helped the team earn eight shutouts.
High Stakes: It is a win or go home scenario Wednesday night, with the winner advancing on to play in the SUNYAC Championship. The championship game will be played on Saturday, November 4
th and will be hosted by the highest remaining seed in the tournament.
