Men's Lacrosse Set For Season Opener at Alfred

Brockport, N.Y.- The SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, February 25th at 2pm to face Alfred on the road to open the 2023 season.

A New Era: In July of 2022, Brockport announced the hiring of new Head Coach Colin Cornaire to assume responsibility for all aspects of the Brockport men's lacrosse program. Cornaire spent four years on the men's lacrosse staff at SUNY Geneseo where he was an assistant, offensive coordinator, and interim head coach for the Knights. During his time at Geneseo, Cornaire helped guide the Knights to a 15-4 SUNYAC record along with making three SUNYAC tournament appearances.

2022 Recap: Brockport finished the 2022 season with a 10-5 record overall and a 5-2 record in SUNYAC play, good for third in the SUNYAC and the second-most single-season wins in program history. The Golden Eagles earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament but fell in the semifinals on the road at Geneseo, 9-4. Brockport set a program record with 191 total goals in the 2022 season, fueled by SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year Rocco Santillo and his 35-goal season. Brockport had six other All-SUNYAC players last year including Patrick Sheridan, Luke Conway, Aidan Fitzgerald, Max Riley, Ethan Stiles, and John Felice.

Schedule Rundown: Brockport's regular season schedule will feature six games at home on the new turf and eight road contests. The Golden Eagles will have three road games to open the season, the last being a March 4th trip to Ohio to battle Wooster at 1 pm. The home opener will be against Westminster College on March 11th at 3 pm.  Brockport will begin conference play at home Saturday, March 25th at 3 pm against Oswego State. The end conference play in the regular season will be a Senior Day matchup versus New Paltz on Saturday, April 29th at 1 pm. The 2022 SUNYAC Semifinals will be played on May 3rd and the championship game is set for May 6th.  The conference tournament winner earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Returning Scorers: Despite losing 7 All-SUNYAC players, the Green and Gold will return several contributors from a successful 2022 season. Seniors Jhovanny Olivares and Jack Peterson will look to make up for lost production in the 2023 season. Last year the duo combined for 33 goals and totaled 53 points. Sophomore midfielder Nate Askin will likely take on a bigger role following an impressive 2022 freshman season. Askin scored 11 goals in 15 games played while also winning 22 of 30 faceoffs.

In the Pipes: Senior Cameron Kuzniar looks poised to take the starting goaltending job following the loss of All-SUNYAC goalie John Felice. Kuzniar played in 5 contests in the 2022 season, allowing just 7 goals and making 10 saves in nearly 80 minutes of game action. Senior Evan O'Connor will also be in the mix after allowing just one goal in nearly 24 minutes of action in his 2022 campaign.

Defense: Seniors Chris Bock and Alex Jacobs will presumably take a bigger role for the Golden Eagle defense, along with returning defensemen Patrick Erway and Justin Sullivan. Brockport allowed the third-fewest goals in SUNYAC play during the 2022 season.

New Faces: The Golden Eagles are welcoming four freshmen to the 2023 roster. The new group of faces include Nick Maslin, Tobin Winslow, Christian Abold, and Bobby Alexander. The Brockport freshman class will look to make up for lost production from the graduating 2022 players.

Preseason Rankings: In the 2023 SUNYAC preseason rankings, Brockport is slotted at 5th, with Cortland taking the top spot after its fourth straight SUNYAC championship. Brockport was 4th in the 2022 preseason poll before finishing the season in third place.

Up Ahead: Following the season opener this weekend, the Golden Eagles will hit the road once again for a matchup with Clarkson University. They head up north for a 4pm start on Wednesday, March 1st.
