Alfred, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team began the 2023 season on the road at Alfred University on Saturday. The Golden Eagles begin the year 0-1 after losing to Alfred, 11-7.
Jackson Worden not only scored his first goal with the Green and Gold, but he notched his first career hat trick as well with three scores on the day. He also led the squad with five ground balls.
Ben Hay started his season with two points, registering one goal and one assist. Matching their teammate,
Jack Peterson and
Nate Askin both tallied one goal and one assist in the contest.
Carson Colucci scored his first goal of the season, while
Ethan Barrett recorded the first assist of his career. Defensively,
Ryan Haugh and
Anthony McGee combined for five caused turnovers.
Goalie
Cameron Kuzniar made his second career start in net, making a career-high of 17 saves in the contest.
With two unanswered goals in the first quarter, the Saxons gained an early 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard. They scored two more early on in the second to make it a 4-goal lead with less than 10 to play before halftime.
Capitalizing on two man-up situations, the Golden Eagles would cut the deficit in half before the break. Both
Carson Colucci and
Jack Peterson would score to make it a 4-2 game at halftime.
Ben Hay assisted on Peterson's man-up goal.
Keeping the momentum from the second quarter, Brockport started the third off strong. Getting assists from
Ethan Barrett and
Jack Peterson,
Jackson Worden score back-to-back goals to tie the game up at 4-4.
Ben Hay got an assist from
Nate Askin to give the squad its first lead of the game, 5-4, with 7:52 left in the third quarter. However, Alfred responded with two more goals to close the period with a 6-5 edge.
The Saxons added one more goal to their tally in the first two minutes of the fourth, taking a 7-5 lead. Brockport got just what it needed with unassisted scores from
Nate Askin and
Jackson Worden. Worden completed his hat trick with 6:23 left in regulation, tying the score up again at 7-7.
Alfred went on to score four straight goals in the final 5:11 of the game, pulling out the 11-7 win at home in the season opener.
The Golden Eagles are back on the road to take on Clarkson University for the next outing. The game is scheduled to start at 4pm on Wednesday, March 4
th.
