Brockport Outpaced by #10 Ithaca in Season Opener


Ithaca, NY – In the season opener for the SUNY Brockport women's lacrosse team, the Green and Gold fell to #10 Ithaca, 15-5. Brockport begins the year 0-1 following the road loss.
 
Cassidy Burnash finished with a team-high three points, from two goals and one assist. Teammate Alayna Foos began the season with a pair of goals as well for the Golden Eagles.
 
Courtney Cunningham starts her senior campaign with one goal, five ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers. In her Brockport debut, Courtney Bednarz tallied her first collegiate point with the first assist of her career.
 
Erin Lant got the start in net, making three saves in 30 minutes of action between the pipes. First-year goalie Hannah Parsons made her college debut with seven saves, also logging 30 minutes of work.
 
To start the game, Ithaca outscored Brockport 5-0 in the opening quarter. Despite grabbing four of the six draw controls in the first, the Green and Gold got outshot by Ithaca, 9-4, in the period.
 
The Golden Eagles turned it on in the second, winning the quarter 4-3. Their first goal of the season came less than two minutes into the quarter, with Alayna Foos getting the score assisted by Cassidy Burnash.
 
Trailing, 5-1, Courtney Cunningham got an assist from Courtney Bednarz for the squad's second goal. Two minutes later, Burnash scored the third straight goal for Brockport to make the score 5-3. Ithaca responded with two quick scores to go up by four on the scoreboard.
 
Alayna Foos added one more in the quarter for the team, scoring the goal unassisted. The nationally-ranked Bombers added another to their tally before the break, heading into halftime up, 8-4.
 
Ithaca struck first in the second half with a goal at 11:36 on the clock. About a minute later, Cassidy Burnash netted her second unassisted goal of the game to make the score read, 9-5. However, that would be the last score of the day for the Green and Gold.
 
The Bombers went on to score six more unanswered goals through the third and fourth quarters to seal the deal. They cruised to a 10-goal victory to start the season 1-0.
 
On Wednesday, March 1st the Golden Eagles will host RIT for their home opener, officially playing on the new turf for the first time. The game is scheduled for a 4pm start in Brockport, NY.
