Roanoke, VA – On Saturday, the Golden Eagles sent
Elijah Sims and
Joe Yanis to compete at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
In the 149-weight class,
Elijah Sims ended his season with a 1-2 showing on the national stage. He lost by a 4-2 decision to Ohio Northern's Chase Sumner in his first bout.
Sims bounced back with an, 8-6, sudden victory in the second match of the day, staying alive in the 149 bracket. Then in a matchup against Charlie Stuhl from Augsburg University, he lost a close 3-1 decision.
Joe Yanis went 0-2 on the day in the 285-division for the Green and Gold. He lost his first match of the tournament by fall in 2:15 to Coe College's Kaleb Reeves.
Yanis had his second chance to work in the next bout. Unfortunately he was defeated once again by fall, this time in 1:12 to Darryl Aiello from Dubuque.
With a pair of losses each on day one, both Sims and Yanis have officially been eliminated from the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The final day of the national tournament is scheduled for an 11 am start at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
