Brockport, NY – In the home opener for the men's lacrosse team, Brockport defeated Westminster, 14-10, to get its first win of the season. Brockport improves to 1-3 overall following the victory.
Nate Askin posted career-highs in both goals and total points. He led the offense with four goals, one assist, five points, and even scooped up three ground balls. Both
Ethan Barrett and
Jhovanny Olivares recorded four points from three assists and one goal.
Jack Peterson and
Ryan McCarthy matched one another with three goals, as they both finished with a hat trick.
Ben Hay and
Mike O'Brien each scored once, while
Jackson Worden dished out one assist.
Goalie
Cameron Kuzniar picks up his first win as the starter in net this season. He made 15 saves in 59:43 minutes of action for the Green and Gold.
Askin got the Golden Eagles going early with back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the game. He sparked what became a 5-goal quarter for the team, as Brockport held a 5-1 lead. However, Westminster closed the first strong to make it a 5-4 game heading into the second.
In the second quarter, four different Brockport players found the back of the net. The squad outscored the opponent, 4-1, in the quarter. Peterson, Askin, and McCarthy scored three unanswered goals to conclude the first half, giving the team a 9-5 lead at the half.
Another goal by Askin early in the third made it a 10-5 score, before Westminster went on a run. The visiting team scored three in a row, including two man-up goals, to close the gap. Peterson came up big for the Golden Eagles with two scores to close the third, as they held a 4-goal lead.
The fourth quarter saw a pair of goals from each team. Despite the efforts of Westminster, Brockport held off any ideas of a late rally to snag the 14-10 win at home.
The Golden Eagles are on the road for their next matchup, when they take on the Utica University Pioneers. Game is scheduled for a 3pm start on Wednesday, March 15
th.
