Women's Lacrosse Hits the Road for This Week's Action

Brockport, NY- The Brockport women's lacrosse team will travel to Rochester for a matchup with the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College on Thursday, March 30th at 4 pm before squaring off with SUNY Potsdam in SUNYAC action on April 1st at 11 am.

Last Time Out: The Golden Eagles dropped a hard-fought battle with #15 SUNY Cortland, 10-8, last Saturday. Sophomore Alayna Foos' second goal of the contest at 9:38 in the second quarter got Brockport out to a 4-2 lead. However, Cortland scored two goals in the last 30 seconds in the quarter to tie the score at 4-4 going into halftime. Foos would find paydirt again in the third, marking her third hat trick of the year. This was followed by a Paige Thowe goal that would give Brockport the lead back with 6:08 in the third. The Red Dragons would respond with four straight goals to jump out to a 9-6 advantage, hanging on to win 10-8. Brockport would fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Staying Hot: Senior Cassidy Burnash has continued her hot start, scoring multiple goals in every contest thus far. In addition, she has recorded three or more points in each of the first five games. Burnash leads the Green and Gold in nearly every statistical category, including goals (15), assists (5), total points (20), and shooting percentage (65.2%).

Sophomore Alayna Foos has recorded a goal or better in all five games on the year, highlighted by three hat trick performances. Foos is tied with Burnash for most shots on goal with 21. Between Foos and Burnash, the duo accounts for an astounding 62.7% of the Golden Eagles' total scoring, with 27 of Brockport's 43 goals on the year.

Two-Way Defense: Junior Paige Thowe has been a potent source of offense from the defense position, posting multiple goals in back-to-back outings. She has finished with two goals against both Rochester and Cortland. Thowe has already surpassed her ground ball output from last year (6) with 7 to begin the season, good for 2nd on the Green and Gold.

Breakout Freshman: Goalie Hannah Parsons made her first start between the pipes against Cortland, also becoming the first Brockport goalie to play the entire 60 minutes on the year. Parsons recorded a strong effort, saving 11 of 21 shots on goal in the 10-8 loss to Cortland. The Penn Yan native leads Brockport goalies with the fewest average goals allowed (13.80), saves (37), and save percentage (48.1%).

Scouting Nazareth: The Golden Flyers have gotten off to a 2-5 start, most recently falling to Oswego on the road 14-7. Nazareth is led by senior Emma States, the lone double-digit goal scorer for the Golden Flyers with an outstanding 26 goals and 32 points in seven games. The Golden Eagles have historically dominated the head-to-head series, winning last year's matchup 16-3 and winning 9 of the last 10 matchups between the two teams since 2012.

Scouting SUNY Potsdam: Potsdam has gotten off to a pedestrian 2-4 start to the 2023 season, losing 21-2 on the road at Geneseo last Saturday. Potsdam will hit the road for a matchup with #15 SUNY Cortland on Wednesday before the matchup with Brockport on Saturday. The Bears are led by senior Anita Reitano, who has scored 19 goals in just 6 games, highlighted by six-goal performances against SUNY Poly and Emmanuel College (MA). Brockport will look to continue its dominance in the series, winning last year's matchup 17-4 and outscoring SUNY Potsdam 93 to 18 across their last 5 meetings, dating back to 2016.

Up Next: Following this weekend, Brockport will travel to face off with the Blue Devils of Fredonia on Tuesday, April 4th at 4 pm.
