Box Score Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's lacrosse team hosted the New Paltz Hawks in the first round of the SUNYAC Conference Tournament Saturday night under the lights. The Golden Eagles got the win, 11-7, advancing to the semifinals for the eighth consecutive season.
Cassidy Burnash had a monster game offensively for the Green and Gold, leading the way with five goals and two assists.
Julia Quinlan and
Alayna Foos both scored a pair of goals.
Paige Thowe and
Haley Chamberlain each found the back of the net once as well.
Defensively, Thowe led the way with three caused turnovers.
Alexandria VanDerKar and
Devin Tietjen both forced two turnovers. VanDerKar (2),
Courtney Cunningham (4), and Quinlan (3) combined for nine of the team's 11 draw controls.
Erin Lant made four saves and allowed seven goals in net.
New Paltz scored first 4:59 minutes into the first period.
Cassidy Burnash answered the call with a goal at 8:22 on the clock. Burnash struck again with 6:14 on the clock two minutes later.
Haley Chamberlain joined the party with a goal at 3:28 in the first. Burnash finished out the first period with a hat trick goal with 2:43 left in the quarter. The Golden Eagles held a 4-1 lead going into the second.
The visiting Hawks dominated the second period scoring 4:49 into the second. Quinlan scored with 8:29 left in the first half assisted by
Cassidy Burnash. New Paltz scored three more times, before Foos broke the stalemate, scoring the goal with :09 seconds left in the first half. Brockport entered the halftime break up 6-5.
The Golden Eagles would go on to shut out New Paltz in the third quarter. Burnash was able to score once again. Just 2:41 into the third, making it an 8-5 lead for the squad. Quinlan netted her second of the night in the period to put Brockport up 9-5 heading into the fourth.
Looking for added cushion onto the lead, Brockport would win the final period, 3-2. Burnash and Foos both scored while the team was on a man-up advantage to offset a pair of scores from New Paltz's Kaitlyn Shaw. Shaw had a big game with six goals for the Hawks. Thowe also scored in the fourth, as the Golden Eagles closed out the 11-7 victory at home.
With the impressive win over New Paltz in the first-round matchup Saturday night, Brockport is now advancing to the SUNYAC Semifinals. The Golden Eagles will travel to take on the No. 1 seed in SUNY Cortland for a 6pm start on Wednesday, May 3
