Brockport, NY – On Wednesday, May 3
rd the SUNY Brockport women's lacrosse team continues its postseason journey in the SUNYAC Semifinals. The No. 4 seeded Golden Eagles will take on the No. 1 seeded Cortland Red Dragons down in Cortland, NY for a 6pm start.
1st Round Victory: Brockport hosted No. 5 New Paltz last weekend for the opening round matchup of the conference tournament. Behind a monster game from standout
Cassidy Burnash, the team defeated the Hawks, 11-7, on the home turf. Burnash led the way with seven points on five goals and a pair of assists. After grabbing a tight, 6-5, lead at halftime, the Green and Gold outscored New Paltz 5-2 in the second half.
Recent Postseason History: With another trip to the SUNYAC Semifinals this year, it marks the program's eighth straight season in the semifinals. Since 2015 Brockport has gone to the semifinals every year, including five trips to the finals and a SUNYAC Title in 2019. Last year the squad fell to Geneseo in the conference semifinals, 12-8.
Statistical Leaders: Burnash is leading the Golden Eagles in all three offensive categories with 77 points, 46 goals, and 31 assists.
Alayna Foos is second on the team with 36 goals, while
Courtney Cunningham is third with 31. Cunningham does it all for the team as she is first on the team in draw controls (66), groundballs (46), and caused turnovers (21).
Protecting the Cage: Erin Lant and
Hannah Parsons have nearly split time evenly in net for the Green and Gold this season. Lant has gotten the starting nod in nine games, closing out the regular season as the starter and playing the full 60 in the first-round game. She has made 53 saves and allowed 73 goals. In her freshman season, Parsons has six starts to her name with 69 saves and 82 goals allowed.
Rematch with the Red Dragons: The semifinals will be the second time this year Brockport and Cortland have faced off. The Golden Eagles will be looking for revenge this time around after losing at home, 10-8, back in March. A tight game from start to finish the two conference rivals were tied at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter. The visiting Red Dragons were able to score three quick goals to start the fourth on the way to a 4-2 period to steal the win.
Win or Go Home: The winning team will survive and advance to the SUNYAC Finals, while the losing team will be eliminated from the conference tournament. The winner of Brockport vs Cortland will face-off against the winner of Geneseo vs Oswego in the championship game. The finals are scheduled for 1pm on Saturday, May 6
th.
