Cortland, NY – No. 4 Brockport lost to No. 1 Cortland Wednesday night in the SUNYAC Semifinals, 19-8. With the loss the Green and Gold are eliminated from the postseason tournament, while the Red Dragons advance to the conference championship game.
Courtney Cunningham led the offensive effort with four goals and also snatched seven draw controls for a team-high.
Alayna Foos finished with three goals, including two off of a free position.
Cassidy Burnash contributed with one goal and one assist in the contest.
Paige Thowe had a team-high two caused turnovers defensively. Both spending time protecting the cage,
Erin Lant and
Hannah Parsons combined for nine saves.
Scores by Foos and Cunningham in the opening minutes gave the Golden Eagles an early 2-0 lead, but the tone of the game would soon change. Cortland responded with seven consecutive goals on the way to 10 goals in the first quarter. Foos scored once more in the first, but the rest of the half belonged to Cortland.
The Red Dragons would go on to take a commanding, 14-3, lead heading into halftime. They outshot Brockport, 29-12, in the opening half, as well as winning the groundball (16-4) and draw control (11-8) battles.
In the third, the Golden Eagles were outscored 4-1 by the home team. Cunningham found the back of the net once, but Cortland remained ahead by 14 going into the fourth. Although Brockport finished strong by winning the final period, 4-1, the deficit was too large to overcome.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles season comes to an end as they finish 8-8 overall with a 6-3 mark in conference play. In her first season leading the program, Head Coach
Bryana Glasser led Brockport to the SUNYAC Semifinals for an eighth consecutive season.
