Tavarez Explodes for Career-High 30 Points in OT Win at Cortland

Cortland, NY – On Saturday the Golden Eagles finished up its back-to-back set this weekend with an overtime win against Cortland, 80-72. Brockport is now 6-4 overall and 2-2 in SUNYAC play this season.
 
Alex Tavarez had the best outing of his short collegiate career so far. He led all scorers with a career-high 30 points on an efficient 11-for-17 effort from the field. Tavarez also went 7-for-9 at the foul line and made his lone attempt from long range.
 
Caquan Wester posted a double-double in the big conference win on the road. He finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds in the contest. Tony Arnold had nine points, seven assists, and three steals. Danny Ashley made an impact with seven steals defensively to go with eight points on the night.
 
The first half saw both teams get off to a slow start offensively, as the two conference foes were tied, 3-3, after the first three minutes of action. Freshman Alex Tavarez provided a lift with eight first half points for the Green and Gold. The score would stay close, as the teams were still tied, 16-16, with 8:36 left in the half.
 
Cortland would finish the first with some momentum, breaking the tie down the stretch before halftime. Kendall Arcuri led all scorers at the break, putting up 10 points for the hosting Red Dragons. They went 6-for-11 from long range to make up for 10 first half turnovers. Cortland would lead, 33-29, going into halftime.
 
Early in the second, the Red Dragons would work to extend their lead. They would go on a quick run to make the score read, 45-36, less than four minutes into the half. Brockport continued to battle, slowly chipping away at the deficit. With 7:55 on the clock, the Green and Gold took the lead, 57-56.
 
The intensity of the game increased for the rest of regulation. Brockport and Cortland traded baskets in the final stretch. The score was tied at 60-60 with just 2:30 left to play. At the end of the second half, the scoreboard remained tied, 62-62, pushing the contest to overtime.
 
Tavarez would be the hero of the night for the Golden Eagles in overtime. In the five-minute period, the freshman went on to score 12 of his career-high 30 points. He went 3-for-3 from the field and 6-for-7 at the charity stripe to give Brockport an 8-point victory on the road.
 
The Golden Eagles are back at home on Tuesday, January 9th for another conference clash. They will host Buffalo State for a 6pm tip-off at The Vlog.
