Daytona, FL – On Monday, December 16
th the Golden Eagle women's basketball team played Plattsburgh State on the first day of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, hosted by DME Academy. Brockport moved to 6-2 overall after a tough, 88-75, loss to the Cardinals.
The first few minutes of the first quarter saw the two teams trading buckets down in Florida. A
Cam Tooley layup at the 5:14 mark gave Brockport a 10-9 lead. From there, the Golden Eagles went on a 16-5 run to close the first period with a 12-point lead.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste scored 14 points in the opening quarter, on the way to a 21-point showing in the first half. She finished the day with a game-high 32 points (11-21 FG, 4-6 3PT) to go with five boards and four steals.
In the second quarter, the Brockport lead would extend to 19 points early on. The Cardinals began to chip away at the lead, working to create just a single-digit deficit with 1:36 left before halftime. A bucket in the paint from
Anna Lee gave the Golden Eagles a 47-36 lead at the break.
Plattsburgh came out in the third quarter and shot the lights out from deep to change the tone of the game. Going 8-for-12 from 3-point territory in the period (14-23 FG), the Cardinals posted 36 points in the quarter. They would end up holding a 72-61 lead over Brockport going into the fourth.
Trailing by 10 with 4:40 remaining in regulation, Brockport's
Mandy Brink gave the team some life with an old-fashioned 3-point play. However, it wasn't enough for the Green and Gold to spark a comeback. Plattsburgh went on to take the win, 88-75, advancing to the championship game of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament against Hardin-Simmons University on Tuesday at 1pm.
SJB's 32 points on the day led all scorers in the contest, as she was 1-point shy of tying her career-high (33pts vs Hamilton). Kaleigh Hunt hit double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Mandy Brink was the team's third double-digit scorer in the game, going for 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor.
Cam Tooley did a little bit of everything as usual, posting six points, nine boards, eight assists, three steals, and two blocks.
With the loss on Monday, Brockport moves on to play in the consolation game of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, hosted by DME Academy. The Golden Eagles will face William Smith College at 11am on Tuesday to conclude the trip down south.
