Brockport, NY – On Wednesday night the SUNY Brockport field hockey team fell to the Ithaca Bombers, 2-0, in non-conference play. Brockport moves to 3-3 overall on the season following the loss.
Early on in the game, the Bombers controlled the possession game. They would outshoot Brockport, 8-2, in the first quarter.
Katelynn Banning was up to the challenge, making five saves in the first.
Banning made her first start of the season and kept the game tied at 0-0 going into the second quarter. Ithaca opened up the scoring early on in the second thanks to Ainsley Grant. Grant was assisted by Juliana Valli on the play, giving Ithaca a 1-0 lead.
About five minutes after the first score, the Bombers found the back of the net once again. This time Natalie Descalso scored on a transition opportunity, assisted by Brooke Snider. Brockport was unable to score before the break, trailing 2-0 at halftime.
The pace of the game slowed down in the second half, as both teams tightened up defensively. Compared to a combined total of 13 shots in the first half, only five total shots occurred in the second.
Ithaca was able to force two shots on goal in the second half of play, while Brockport's offense was held without one. Banning made two more saves in the fourth quarter to total seven for the contest.
Since neither team could find another score in the match, Ithaca held on for the 2-0 win. The nationally ranked Bombers improved to 5-2 overall on the season.
The Golden Eagles (3-3) will be back on the road this weekend for a chance to get back in the win column. They will play their first Empire 8 conference game on Saturday, September 21
st at Elmira for a 4:30pm start.
