ALBANY, NY – The SUNY Brockport women's basketball team defeated the Russell Sage Gators by a score of 84-67 on Saturday afternoon. The team has now won four games in a row and remains undefeated in Empire 8 play with a 3-0 slate and a 10-2 overall record.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste continued her excellent play this season with a 23-point outing on 9-12 shooting to lead all scorers. She is now averaging 20.7, making her the third leading scorer in the Empire 8.
Kaileigh Hunt was great on both ends, providing 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also dished out a team-high four assists in the contest.
Peyton Maneri continued her impressive freshman campaign with a 12 point on 6-13 shooting.
The Golden Eagles scored from the interior with much success in the matchup, totaling 54 points in the paint. As a team, they shot 31-56 from inside the three-point arc. They brought pressure on defense for much of the game as well, forcing 25 turnovers on the way to snagging 13 steals as a team.
Brockport came out the gate quickly, opening with a 9-4 lead in the opening minutes. Shannon Blankenship scored seven of the team's first nine with a three pointer and pair of layups.
In the first quarter Brockport shot an efficient 56 percent from the field, totaling 27 points in the opening frame. This was its second highest scoring quarter of the season thus far. The team also forced 10 turnovers in the frame.
Jean-Baptiste caught fire in the second. The junior tipped a pass seconds into the quarter and went coast to coast for an acrobatic and-one finish on the other end. She would score 14 of the team's 18 points in the second as Brockport went into halftime leading 45-35.
Hunt and Jean-Baptiste got the Brockport offense going early in the second half, combining to score the first eight points of the third. The Golden Eagles took a 20-point lead after four minutes of play in the quarter and didn't look back. Sage would seek to battle back with little success as Brockport cruised to a comfortable 17-point victory.
The Golden Eagles are back in action at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14th as they host the SUNY Poly Wildcats in the We Back Pat Alzheimer's Awareness Game from the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
