Williamsport, PA – The Golden Eagle wrestling team completed day one of the NCAA DIII Region II Championships, hosted by Lycoming College. With a total of 49.5 points, Brockport sits in 10
th place out of 19 teams going into the final day.
At 125,
Liam Bullock had his run come to an end following his third bout. After a win by fall (1:42) to start the day, Bullock fell in the next two matchups (11-5 decision & fall in 0:22).
Matthew Reehill had a short showing in the 133 division. He lost by fall (4:06) in his first bout, before falling again in the next match in a 12-6 decision.
In the 141 weight class,
Jaden Friel fought hard to stay alive in the bracket. Friel took a 21-17 decision win in the prelims before earning a tech fall in (21-5 in 6:51) in the first championship round. After a loss in the quarterfinal, Jaden kept his national hopes alive with a 10-7 decision win to finish his day.
Alex Smith lost his two bouts by a tech fall (16-0 in 2:42) and major decision (8-0) in the 149 weight class bracket.
Marquis Larmond won his first matchup by a 11-8 decision. However, his day was ended after 5-0 and 2-1 decision losses at 157.
In the 165 division,
Vandavian Way went 3-1 on the day. He picked up a win by fall (1:17) in the prelims, before falling in a 7-4 decision in the second bout. Way then pinned back-to-back opponents (4:30 & 2:04) to stay alive.
Gavin McLaughlin is also set to compete on day two after a strong outing in the 174 bracket. He picked up a major decision (19-6) in his first bout and then lost by fall in 1:27 in the second bout. McLaughlin finished strong with a pair of decision wins of 6-1 and 8-3.
At 184,
Kiam Coleman lost his first bout by decision, 12-10. Kiam bounced back in the next match with a pin in just 25 seconds. However, his run ended after a loss by fall in 1:29 in his third matchup.
Simon Lingle went 3-1 on the day after some tough battles in the 197 weight class. He won his prelim matchup with a 12-1 major decision. The second bout saw Lingle fall by a major decision, 13-4. He battled for decision victories of both 8-2 and 6-5 to close out his Saturday.
Hoping to qualify for nationals for a second year in a row,
Nick Franco remains active in the 285 division. He Won his first matchup of the day by fall (0:47). Then in the quarterfinals bout he earned another win, this time by a major decision (13-5).
The Golden Eagles who are still active going into Sunday's set of matches will have a chance to fight for the right to punch their tickets to nationals. Day two of regionals at Lycoming College is set to begin at 10am.
