Brockport, NY – The wrestling team finished up at regionals this past weekend in 10
th place (78 points), and were fortunate to send two Golden Eagles to the NCAA Division III Championships in March.
At 125,
Trevor Middendorf punched his ticket to the NCAA tournament after finishing the two-day competition in second place, scoring 17.5 team points. Middendorf's first victory came from a 21-6 tech fall in the champ round 2. He took two back-to-back wins by an 8-6 decision and a 5-2 decision in the quarter and semi-final rounds. Middendorf's dominating run came to an end in the 1
st place match.
At 285,
Mike Welsh also earned his spot at nationals after placing second and contributing 18.5 points to the team. Welsh started his bout strong with a tech fall win, moving to the quarterfinal round where he won by an 8-0 major decision. In the semifinal round, Welsh won by an exciting tie-breaker win and moved to the 1
stplace match where his dominating day ended.
Finishing sixth and scoring 13 points at 157 was
Tyler Rossini who had three strong wins on the day. Rossini set the tone with a pin at 4:33 in the second round. Rossini finished out his run with two major decisions of 13-2 and 4-2.
Avery Bustamante placed sixth and scored 10 points for the Green and Gold after starting the 184lb division with a 14-4 major decision. Bustamante then added a 10-5 decision and a 7-3 decision.
At 197 lbs,
Simon Lingle finished in eighth place, scoring 6 team points. Lingle won by a 17-0 tech fall, followed by a close 2-1 decision and 5-4 decision to finish out the day.
Mason Mangialino contributed 8 points to the team in the 149lb division, starting the day on a high note with a pin at just 0:32. Mangialino took a win by injury default in the cons round two, and added another pin in round three at 1:28.
