Student-Athlete Workshop Series Hosted by Mental Health Counselor Shannon Niles

Student-Athlete Workshop Series

SUNY Brockport athletics and the Hazen Center for Integrated Care are proud to host a 10-week Student-Athlete Workshop Series designed to support the mental health and wellness of student-athletes.

Workshops will be held every Thursday from 12:00–1:30 PM in the Eagle's Lookout (Tuttle Complex). Bring your lunch and join the conversation!

Meet the Facilitator

This workshop series is led by Shannon Niles, a dedicated Mental Health Counselor at SUNY Brockport. Shannon specializes in supporting student-athletes navigating the unique challenges of performance-related stress, identity development, injury recovery, and body image concerns.

With a background in playing multiple sports during and after college, Shannon brings a relatable and empathetic approach to her work. She understands the strong connection between mental health and athletic performance and creates a safe, supportive environment for student-athletes to build confidence, strengthen resilience, and prioritize wellness—both in and beyond sport.

Education & Credentials:

  • MS, Clinical Mental Health Counseling – SUNY Brockport (2022)

  • BA, Psychology – University of South Florida (2018)

  • BA, Communications and Theater – SUNY Potsdam (2003)

  • MHC-LP (Mental Health Counselor, Limited Permit)

  • CASAC-T (Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor, Trainee)

Areas of Specialty: Anxiety, Performance Stress, Body Image Struggles, Depression, Disordered Eating, Low Self-Esteem, and Interpersonal Issues.

  • 10/23 – Workshop #5: Coping with Injuries as a College Athlete

  • 10/30 – Workshop #6: College Athletes and Substance Use – with the Monroe County Health Department & Hazen AOD counselor, Lindsay Fink

  • 11/6 – Workshop #7: Performance Anxiety & Competition Stress as a College Athlete

  • 11/13 – Workshop #8: Mental Health & Being a College Athlete

  • 11/20 – Workshop #9: Disordered Eating as a College Athlete – with guest speaker Jessica Mitrano from Monte Nido Eating Disorder Clinic (Trigger Warning)
