Brockport, NY - The SUNY Brockport Women's Tennis team is set to compete in its second-to-last home match of the regular season, hosting Houghton this Friday, October 3rd, at 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles are looking to utilize their home-court advantage as they seek to build momentum against a challenging Highlanders squad.
Last Week's Recap: The Golden Eagles faced a demanding schedule last weekend with two road matches. Traveling to Rochester on Friday, September 26th, the team suffered a shutout 0-7 loss against Nazareth College. The team then traveled to Alfred on Saturday, September 27th, resulting in a 6-1Â defeat to the Saxons. Despite the difficult results, the team showed fight, particularly in singles action against Alfred, with key wins hinting at future success.
Freshman Spotlight - Banes and Masker Shine: Despite the recent road losses, the team saw strong individual performances from its newest members. Freshman Leah Banes showcased her consistent form against the Saxons, picking up her fourth doubles win of the season and a hard-earned third singles win. Banes, paired with Olivia Chiu, took care of business in doubles with a hard-fought 6-4 victory, which she followed up with a swift 6-2, 6-3 win in singles action.
Freshman Gianna Masker also continued to excel in doubles play, picking up her fourth doubles win of the season. Masker and her partner, Erin McMichael, took down a pair of Golden Flyers with a convincing 6-4 win during the Nazareth contest, demonstrating the future depth of the program.
Looking Toward the Highlanders: The Houghton Highlanders arrive at Brockport holding a 3-4 overall record. The Highlanders have demonstrated their potential with two dominant sweeping victories, achieved against Utica and Russell Sage.
Houghton holds a solid lineup, particularly in singles play. Freshman Sage Brinckerhoff and sophomore Victoria Martinez have been formidable opponents this season, each holding an impressive 6-1 singles record, making the top of the singles ladder a key area to watch in Friday's contest.
