Offensive Outburst Leads Women's Basketball Past Utica, 97-78

BROCKPORT, NY - The Brockport Women's Basketball team (8-6, 4-1 E8) rolled past Utica University (5-9, 1-4 E8) on the road, 97-78, on Friday, January 16th. The Golden Eagles are riding back-to-back conference wins on the week, moving into a tie with Russell Sage for second place in the Empire 8 conference.

Stephanie Jean-Baptiste provided her best outing to date, scoring a season-high 29 points (9-16 FG) with eight rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Jean-Baptiste posted perfection as the free-throw line, going nine-for-nine and setting a new single-game career high in made free throws.

Brianna Carey was unstoppable from three point range, drilling six shots from beyond the arc (6-8) to set a new career high with 24 points. Carey was just as strong on defense, snatching three steals in a standout performance.

Mandy Brink was firing on all cylinders, scoring 18 points (7-13 FG) with a career high six steals, three rebounds, and three assists in a dynamic 29 minutes of action.

Utica would open the contest with a three-point make, serving as the lone 1:19 that the Pioneers would hold the league. The Golden Eagles offense would start hot from the floor, scoring 27 points in the first 10 minutes. Brockport would enjoy strong 42% shooting from the floor in the opening quarter (11-26).

The Pioneers would bounce back in a big way in the second quarter, shooting 75% from beyond the arc (3-4) and holding Brockport to just 26% shooting from the floor (5-19). Despite cutting the Brockport lead to one in the quarter, two Brianna Carey three pointers entering halftime helped give Brockport a nine point lead at the break.

The Golden Eagles would soar away in the third quarter, serving as the squad's best offensive quarter of the season. The Green and Gold would erupt for 32 points on scorching 64.7% shooting (11-17), seeing Brianna Carey add three more three pointers to help fuel the attack. Mandy Brink's layup near the buzzer would give Brockport a 18 point lead entering the final 10 minutes.

Despite cutting the Brockport lead to 14 points, late buckets from Ava Howie, Casey Mahony, and Claire Turner would secure a 19 point win for Brockport. Turner provided a strong effort, leading Brockport with nine rebounds, adding eight points and three steals.

Jackie Kozakiewicz picked up the start for Brockport, scoring seven points with two steals while setting new career bests in assists (3) and minutes played (25).

As a unit, the Golden Eagles set new single-game season bests in points (97) and three point percentage (42.9%).
