BROCKPORT, NY - The Brockport Women's Basketball team (9-6, 5-1 E8) secured its third consecutive Empire 8 victory, defeating SUNY Poly (3-11, 0-6 E8) from Utica, 76-66, on Saturday, January 17th. With the win, the Golden Eagles have come out on top in five of their last six outings.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste paced the Brockport scoring attack, leading all players with 17 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Jean-Baptiste was just as effective defensively, snatching a game-high four steals.
Mandy Brink provided another big outing for Brockport, dropping 15 points with a career-high six assists, adding eight rebounds. Brink added strong shooting from both three point range (3-7) and the free throw line (4-4).
Claire Turner commanded the paint for the Green and Gold, collecting 10 points and 10 rebounds in her first double-double performance as a Golden Eagle. Turner's 10 points marked a season-high, with her 10 rebounds serving as the game high.
In the first quarter, the Brockport offense would come out of the gates slow, shooting just 15.8% (3-19 FG) from the floor for 10 points in the first 10 minutes. Despite a
Josie Wray free throw to put Brockport up 10-9, SUNY Poly would close the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a six point lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter would see the Brockport offense come to life, connecting for seven field goals with three coming from downtown. The Golden Eagles would double their first quarter scoring output, dropping 20 points to cut the Wildcat lead to three entering halftime. Three point makes from
Brianna Carey (2) and
Ava Howie helped power the Brockport offense. Carey would build off a strong shooting outing against Utica, connecting from downtown three times (3-7) and finishing with 14 points. She provided another dynamic effort, adding a game-high six assists and four steals.
The Golden Eagles offense would command the second half, scoring 46 points including 24 third quarter points. Brockport would connect for four three point makes in the third quarter, with
Casey Mahony's to close out the third quarter giving Brockport a 54-52 edge entering the final 10 minutes.
The Brockport defense would make its mark in the fourth quarter, holding the Wildcats to just 14 points on 33% shooting from the floor. Despite SUNY Poly tying the contest at 60-60 with 7:44 left, a clutch
Addy VanDewater three pointer would keep Brockport ahead for the final 7:09 of the fourth, securing a 10 point victory.
Casey Mahony provided a spark off the bench, showcasing perfect shooting from deep (2-2, 3PT), and finishing with eight points and three rebounds.
