BROCKPORT, NY - The Brockport Women's Basketball team (10-6, 6-1 E8) defeated Houghton University (11-4, 3-4 E8) on the road, 70-59, on Friday, January 23rd. The victory marked the Golden Eagle's fourth straight win.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste turned in a gutsy performance for Brockport, leading the squad with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double effort of the season. Jean-Baptiste's 12 rebounds matched a career-high, finishing tied with
Claire Turner for the Brockport game-high. She would add three assists and a steal in a winning effort.
Brianna Carey continued her excellent play, dropping 12 points on effective shooting (5-11 FG, 2-5 3PT), adding six rebounds and three steals. Carey has posted 12+ points and 3+ steals in each of her last three outings, playing a season high 33 minutes in the win.
Peyton Maneri was effective in her return to the lineup, leading all players with five steals and five assists, adding eight points in a strong performance. Maneri has snatched three or more steals in each of her last three games.
The Golden Eagles would soar out of the gate, beginning the first quarter on a 10-0 run across the first 2:06, capped off with a
Mandy Brink three pointer. The Highlanders offense would find a groove, finishing the quarter on a 20-6 run to take a four point lead into the second quarter (20-16).
Brockport would provide a bounce-back second quarter, scoring 19 points on effective 50% shooting (7-14) and holding Houghton to 19% shooting from the floor (4-21).
Brianna Carey was unstoppable in the frame, scoring 10 points on perfect 4-4 shooting (2-2 3PT), including a three pointer with 15 seconds left to give Brockport a 35-33 edge going into halftime.
Showing shades of the first quarter, the Golden Eagles would begin the second half on another 10-0 run.
Addy VanDewater's would cap off the third quarter run, seeing Brockport hold Houghton scoreless in the first 4:20 of the second half. The Brockport defense would command the remainder of the contest, holding Houghton to just 26 second half points on 25% shooting (9-36). The Green and Gold would double up Houghton on the glass in the third, snatching 16 rebounds to the Highlanders eight.
Heading into the final 10 minutes with a eight point edge, Houghton would begin to mount a comeback. Seven unanswered Highlander points to open the fourth would cut the lead to one, but two huge
Claire Turner baskets and a
Addy VanDewater three pointer would put Brockport back up by seven. SJB would help secure the win, scoring five fourth quarter points to lead Brockport to a 11 point victory.
Mandy Brink rounded out the double digit scorers for Brockport, pouring in 10 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Brockport's defensive attack sealed the victory, holding Houghton to just 15.6% shooting from beyond the arc on 32 attempts (5-32).
