Wrestling Set for Weekend of Quad Meet Action

Brockport, NY – The wrestling team is back on the road this weekend to compete in the WPI Quad Match in Worcester, MA on Saturday, January 1st at 11am. The Golden Eagles will be up against the University of Southern Maine, New England College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

SUNYAC Championships Recap – Last weekend, Brockport hosted eight other schools for the SUNYAC Championships and came out on top, taking the championship title with a combined 167 points. 

Brockport had a plethora of individual champions and finalists, starting off strong with Trevor Middendorf taking first place in the 125lb weight class and scoring a strong 22 points. Middendorf won by tech fall in round 2, quarterfinals, and the semifinals, and ended on a high note with a pin to take the victory in the first-place match. 

Tyler Rossini was another top finisher, taking gold at 157 lbs, scoring a team high 24 points, also earning him Empire 8 Wrestler of the Week after a dominating weekend. Rossini pinned his way through the first two rounds and quarterfinals. He then had a 12-5 decision win in the semifinals, moving on to the 1st place match, where he won by fall. 

At 133, Makhare Rogers finished the day taking second in his bout, earning 17 team points. Rogers made it to the quarterfinals after back-to-back technical fall wins and took another win by decision. Rogers finished the day with a fight for an 8-7 decision in the semifinals.

Gavin McLaughlin had a day in the 174lb division, finishing in second, contributing 15 points to the team. McLaughlin advanced through the bracket with a major decision and two decisions to finish out the day with a semifinal win. 

Avery Bustamante secured a second place finish at 184 lbs, adding 16 points for the Golden Eagles. In the opening round, Bustamante took a win by fall, followed by a 17-3 major decision and a 4-2 victory in the semifinal round. 

In the 197lb division, Simon Lingle earned himself second place and 17 points after a win by fall in round 2 and a 12-1 major decision in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Lingle took the 8-5 decision to finish out the day. 

Mason Mangialino also finished in the top 3 of the 149 lb bout, taking third place and contributing 17.5 team points. Mangialino secured two major decisions and a fall, bringing him to the semifinals. He finished the competition with a win by no contest in the 3rd place match. 

Brockport had five other podium finishers on the day, including Luca Friedman (4th place), Mike Welsh (4thplace), Alex Smith (6th place), Max Morrison (6th place), and Kiam Coleman (6th place). 

The Green and Gold are set to compete in the Castleton Quad match on Saturday, February 7th at 12pm in Castleton, VT. Brockport is set to go up against Springfield College, Johnson & Wales University, and Vermont State University Castleton.
