Women's Basketball Rolls Past Elmira to Open Conference Play

BROCKPORT, NY - The Brockport Women's Basketball team opened Empire 8 play at home with a statement win over Elmira, 75-55, on Tuesday, January 6th. The Golden Eagles improved to 5-5 on the season following the victory.

Brianna Carey provided her best outing as a Golden Eagle, leading all scorers with a season-high 19 points on excellent 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Carey added three steals and two assists in a dynamic 19 minute effort for the Green and Gold.

Stephanie Jean-Baptiste put on a defensive masterclass, snatching a season-high five steals to go with 11 points and two assists. With her 11 point outing, SJB has scored 11+ points in each of her nine games played on the season.

The Golden Eagles set the tone from the opening tip, scoring 14 points off several Elmira turnovers in the first 10 minutes alone. Brockport would supplement excellent defense with effective shooting, going 9-of-16 from the floor in the first ten minutes. The Green and Gold would take a commanding 24-10 lead into the second quarter.

Despite struggling from the field in the second quarter, relentless defense from the Green and Gold would hold the Soaring Eagles to just 16.6% shooting in the quarter. Despite a late Ava Howie three to extend Brockport's lead to 22, a late 7-0 Elmira run would send Brockport into halftime leading 35-20.

Coming out of halftime, Brockport would catch fire from beyond the arc, hitting five threes in the third quarter (5-10). Jackie Kozakiewicz would kick-start the hot shooting from deep, leading to three point makes from Mandy Brink, and three downtown hits from Brianna Carey. The Golden Eagles defense stayed sharp, allowing just 14 points and taking a 20 point lead into the final 10 minutes.

Brockport would stay hot from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, connecting for four more three pointers and finishing 9-of-16 from three point range in the second half. Brianna Carey would drill her fourth three pointer of the game, followed by deep jumpers from Lila Lovgren (2) and Addy VanDewater. Lovgren (6PTS, 5REB) and VanDewater (7PTS, 2AST) combined for four three pointers off the bench. Despite allowing 21 Elmira points in the fourth, Brockport would match the visitors point total to cruise to a 20 point conference win.

Ten different Golden Eagles would score in the contest, with seven different players finishing with five more points. Brockport finished the contest with 20 steals, leading to 30 Soaring Eagle turnovers.

Claire Turner (6PTS) and Josie Wray (3PTS, 2STL) each led Brockport with six rebounds each.

Up Next: Brockport will host St. John Fisher on Friday, January 9th, with tip-off scheduled for 2PM.
