Women's Lacrosse Drops Hard Fought Season Opener Against #23 Ithaca, 13-10

Box Score BROCKPORT, NY -  The Brockport Women's Lacrosse team came up short in season opener action against Ithaca College, 13-10, on Saturday, February 14th.

The visiting Bombers would start the contest strong, netting the first two goals of the contest. Ithaca would net two goals in 2:20 to take a 2-0 lead at the 12:40 mark of the first. Less than two minutes later, Hailey Lewkovich would cut the Ithaca lead in half.

An excellent feed from Karaline McCarthy would set up Lewkovich's first goal of the contest at the 10:47 mark of the first period. McCarthy to Lewkovich was the common connection on the afternoon, with the duo providing four goals for the Green and Gold.

After back-to-back Bomber goals to go up 4-1, the Golden Eagles would cut into the lead, scoring two of the final three goals of the quarter. Kaeli McCarthy would net her first goal of the season, followed by a Karaline McCarthy unassisted goal to enter the second quarter down 5-3. Karaline McCarthy would have a hand in all three first-quarter goals for Brockport, racking up three points in the first 15 minutes (G, 2A).

Hailey Lewkovich would open the scoring for Brockport in the second quarter, cutting the lead to one (5-4) thanks in part to a Journey Naab. Ithaca would respond quickly, scoring two goals in the quarter to match Brockport's offensive production. Ciara Pogue would round out the Brockport scoring in the quarter, with Karaline McCarthy notching another assist.

Entering the second half up 7-5, Ithaca would run away with the contest in the third period. Four unanswered Bomber goals would give the visitors an 11-5 edge entering the final frame.

Needing goals in a hurry, the McCarthy to Lewkovich connection would return. The duo would strike for the first two goals of the fourth quarter, bringing Brockport within four goals (11-7). Despite netting the final three goals of the contest, two Ithaca tallies would sink the Brockport comeback, escaping with a 13-10 win.

Emily Schiffer and Journey Naab would round out the scoring for Brockport, with Ciara Pogue chipping in with an assist on the Schiffer goal.

Hailey Lewkovich (5G) and Karaline McCarthy (1G, 6A) effectively carried the Brockport offense, combining for 12 points on the afternoon. The duo accounted for over 66% of Brockport's offensive output.

Christina Ross led Brockport with four draw controls, adding a caused turnover in a solid effort.

Arianna Reed provided a strong outing for Brockport, making 11 stops on the day.

Kaeli McCarthy provided a strong two-way day, scoring a goal and causing a team-high three turnovers.

Up Next: Brockport will head to Rochester for non-conference play on Wednesday, February 25th, at 4 PM.
