ONEONTA, NY – In a game of relentless runs and momentum shifts, the SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team (0-2) suffered a 14-13 loss to Oneonta on Saturday afternoon. Despite a furious second-half effort that saw the Golden Eagles erase a significant early deficit, a goal by Oneonta's Thomas Hnis with just one second remaining on the clock proved to be the difference.
How It Happened
The contest opened with a flurry of activity, but it was the Red Dragons who dictated the early tempo. After
Gavin Wellington opened the scoring for Brockport , Oneonta responded with a 5-0 run to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The Golden Eagles showed their first sign of resilience late in the first quarter, as
Michael Dowden netted two quick goals—the second assisted by
Daniel Stiles—to narrow the gap to 5-3
The second quarter belonged to the Green and Gold. Brockport's defense tightened, and the offense found its rhythm, outscoring Oneonta 4-2 in the frame. Goals from
Patrick Donahoe,
Nicholas Bisesi, and two from
Pierson Jacobs helped the Golden Eagles claw back to a 7-7 tie heading into the halftime break.
Brockport appeared to take control in the third period. After falling behind briefly on an Oneonta man-up goal , the Golden Eagles erupted for four unanswered tallies.
Daniel Stiles,
Daniel Wright, and Jacobs all found the back of the net, but the highlight of the run was a goal by
Tyler Pastore—his first of the 2026 season—to help Brockport carry an 11-8 lead into the final 15 minutes.
The Final Frame
The lead extended to 12-8 early in the fourth following a goal by
Rorick Perry, his second of the season. Even after Oneonta answered,
Daniel Stiles struck again to maintain a 13-9 cushion with 12:12 remaining.
However, the Red Dragons refused to fade. Oneonta capitalized on a late surge, scoring five consecutive goals to end the game. The final sequence was a heartbreaker for the Golden Eagles: after a defensive stand and a timeout, Oneonta's Thomas Hnis beat the buzzer with one second left to play, securing the 14-13 victory for the hosts.
