BROCKPORT, NY – Facing a powerhouse opponent in their 2026 home opener, the SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team (0-3) struggled to contain a high-powered offense, falling 24-7 to No. 16 SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon. Despite a gritty performance from the defensive unit and flashes of offensive rhythm, a dominant third quarter by the Red Dragons proved insurmountable for the Golden Eagles.
How It Happened
Brockport struck first when
Michael Dowden found the back of the net off an assist from
Marc Zappulla just three minutes in. After Cortland leveled the score,
Daniel Stiles capitalized on a man-up opportunity, assisted by Dowden, to reclaim a 2-1 lead for the Golden Eagles. However, Cortland responded with two late tallies to carry a 3-2 lead into the second frame.
The second quarter saw Cortland begin to dictate the tempo, outscoring Brockport 4-1.
Daniel Stiles managed to keep the Golden Eagles within striking distance with an unassisted goal at the 6:40 mark, but a late surge by the Red Dragons, including a goal with just nine seconds remaining in the half, sent Brockport to the locker room trailing 7-3.
The wheels came off in the third period as the No. 16 Red Dragons exploded for 10 goals. Cortland opened the half with a 5-0 run in under four minutes. Brockport attempted to stem the tide with goals from
Marc Zappulla and
Daniel Wright, but the Red Dragons' transition game proved too much to handle. By the end of the third, the deficit had ballooned to 17-6.
In the final 15 minutes,
Mason Michel added one more for Brockport, but Cortland's depth was on full display as they closed the game with seven straight goals.
