CASTLETON, VT – Fresh off a dominant SUNYAC Championship title and a successful road trip to Worcester, the SUNY Brockport wrestling team faced its most daunting challenge of the season on Saturday at the Castleton Quad. The Golden Eagles went toe-to-toe with a trio of nationally ranked powerhouses: #10 Castleton, #14 Johnson & Wales, and #20 Springfield College.
While Brockport dropped all three duals—falling 33-6 to Castleton, 34-6 to Johnson & Wales, and 34-11 to Springfield—the day was defined by grit and high-level competition against the country's best.
Dual and Extra Match Results
The Green and Gold faced a relentless schedule, utilizing both the primary duals and "extra matches" to test their depth against elite talent.
Brockport vs. #10 Castleton - In the opening session, the Golden Eagles faced a top-ten Spartan squad.
- 141 lbs: Jaden Friel earned a hard-fought 19-13 decision over V. Banda.
- 141 lbs: Grant Harmon secured a dominant 14-3 major decision over G. Gioio.
- 149 lbs: Bo Drummond provided a massive spark, pinning J. Marcellus in just 1:16.
- 285 lbs: Mike Welsh gutted out a 5-2 decision win over L. Frank.
Despite these wins, Castleton showed their depth with victories over D. Levine (Fall 2:38), K. Kelley (MD 13-4), B. Salter (Fall 3:54), T. King (Fall 4:48), and
Tyler Rossini (Dec 5-0).
In the upper weights, Castleton took wins over M. Morrison (TF 18-2), E. Bonet (TF 18-3),
Gavin McLaughlin (Dec 5-1), J. Downer (Fall 4:30),
Avery Bustamante (Dec 9-2), and
Simon Lingle (Fall 4:50).
Brockport vs. #14 Johnson & Wales - Moving to Mat 2, the Golden Eagles faced a perennially strong Wildcats team.
- 133 lbs: Makhare Rogers bounced back with a clinical performance, earning a 7-4 decision victory.
- 157 lbs: Tyler Rossini notched another win for the Green and Gold, fighting his way to an 8-4 decision.
- Despite these strong individual performances, the #14-ranked Wildcats took the dual 34-6.
Brockport vs. #20 Springfield - The intensity continued against the Pride, where every point was a battle.
- 125 lbs: D. Levine fell in a high-scoring 15-6 major decision to H. Sanchez.
- 133 lbs: K. Kelley dropped a tight 8-4 decision to A. Oberc.
- 141 lbs: J. Friel was caught in a fall at the 2:55 mark by I. Quiles.
- 149 lbs: Mason Mangialino battled in a narrow 3-0 decision loss to T. Stewart.
Individual Standouts
Despite the team scores, several Golden Eagles proved they could compete with the nation's elite:
- Bo Drummond (149): Recorded the fastest pin of the day for the Green and Gold (1:16).
- Jaden Friel (141): Showed incredible offensive output in his 19-13 victory.
- Mike Welsh (285): Continued his reliable presence at heavyweight with a signature win over #10-Castleton.
- Grant Harmon (141): Delivered a clinical major decision to add to the team's bonus-point total.
