Brockport Lacrosse Bests U of R in OT Thriller

Brockport, NY – The Brockport women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season in dramatic fashion on Wednesday. On the home turf, the Golden Eagles defeated the University of Rochester in overtime, 9-8.

With 1:05 left on the clock in the overtime period, it was Karaline McCarthy who played the hero. She scored the golden goal, unassisted, to capitalize on the man-up situation in OT. McCarthy had a big day with six points on four goals and two assists, while also coming up with seven draw controls.

Hailey Lewkovich (2G), Tristan Davis (1G, 1A), and Emily Schiffer (1G, 1A) each had two points in the contest. Caitlin Mulvihill made an impact defensively with four caused turnovers in a close battle at home.

Arianna Reed did what she had to between the posts to earn the win as the Golden Eagle goalie. The sophomore came up with nine saves and was credited four ground balls.

The first half saw a lot of action on both sides of the field. Brockport got the scoring started, but the U of R was able to answer right away. Although the home team was up 3-2 at the end of one, Rochester tied the match up at 4-4 in the second quarter.

Brockport finished the first half with three unanswered goals. This included back-to-back scores from Hailey Lewkovich within a minute of each other. Lewkovich helped guide Brockport to a 7-4 lead at the break.

A quiet third quarter produced just one goal, going the way of Rochester. The Yellowjackets would eventually close the gap in the fourth to tie the game at 7-7. With 2:13 on the clock, Karaline McCarthy put Brockport on top once again, 8-7. With 1.8 seconds left in regulation, Rose Bunting scored for Rochester to send the game to overtime.

The Golden Eagles had two man-up situations in overtime after a pair of Rochester penalties. On the second go around, McCarthy scored to snag the win for Brockport in front of the home crowd.

Now at 1-2 on the season, Brockport heads to Clarkson University for a 12pm matchup on Saturday, March 7th.
