ALFRED, N.Y. — The Brockport Golden Eagles men's lacrosse team (2-9, 2-2 Empire 8) battled through a back-and-forth conference matchup on Wednesday evening, ultimately falling to the Alfred Saxons, 8-7. Despite a resilient fourth-quarter comeback that tied the game late, a final goal from the Saxons proved to be the difference.
How It Happened
Brockport established early momentum in the first quarter. Austin Thornhill opened the scoring unassisted just 53 seconds into the game. After Alfred responded with a three-goal run to take a 3-1 lead, the Golden Eagles answered with a decisive three-goal surge of their own. Daniel Wright sparked the run with an unassisted goal, followed by back-to-back man-up goals from Pierson Jacobs and Wright to give Brockport a 4-3 lead heading into the second period.
The second quarter saw momentum shift back to the Saxons. Jacobs extended Brockport's lead to 5-3 early in the period off a feed from Daniel Stiles, but Alfred closed the half with three consecutive goals—including two from Nick Volpe—to take a 6-5 advantage into the break.
Defense took center stage in the third quarter, with Alfred scoring the only goal of the period on a man-up opportunity to extend its lead to 7-5. Brockport's defense, led by Jared Kulik in net, turned away several Saxon attempts to keep the game within reach.
The Golden Eagles surged in the fourth quarter to erase the deficit. Rorick Perry found the back of the net at the 11:01 mark, and Gavin Wellington tied the game at 7-7 with 7:49 remaining following an assist from Stiles. However, Alfred's Brendan Riley scored the go-ahead goal with 4:44 left on the clock. Brockport had multiple opportunities in the final minute, including shots by Jacobs and Wellington, but could not find the equalizer before time expired.
The Golden Eagles matched the Saxons' physicality throughout the contest, leading in ground balls (40-39) and clears (23-26).
