Brockport, NY- The women's tennis team picked up a convincing 6-1 Empire 8 victory over Alfred University this afternoon at the Brockport Tennis Courts. The Eagles improved to 3-2 overall in the season, while Alfred dropped to 2-4.
Brockport took control early by securing the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Samantha Basovsky and Mackenzie King opened with a 6-3 victory over Camryn Moore and Anastasia Shaw at No. 2 doubles, while Gianna Masker and Kathleen Rogers followed with a dominant 6-1 win against Caitlin Bittel and Abby Coombs at No. 3. Alfred claimed the No. 1 doubles match, as Becca Epping and Elizabeth Madsen defeated Cara Vasile and Leah Banes, 6-3.
Brockport carried the momentum into singles play, winning five of the six matches. Leah Banes earned a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Madsen, 6-3, 6-4. Mackenzie King followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shaw at No. 3 singles.
The Golden Eagles continued to pull away at No. 4 singles, where Samantha Basovsky battled past Moore in a three-set thriller. Basovsky took the opening set, 6-3, before Moore answered with a 6-4 second-set victory. Basovsky then prevailed, 7-6, in the decisive third set to secure another point for the Highlanders.
At No. 6 singles, Katie Tabor added another straight-set victory for Brockport, defeating Coombs, 6-2, 6-3. Gianna Masker was also credited with a victory at No. 5 singles, while Cara Vasile battled Epping at No. 1 singles. Vasile took the second set, 7-5, after dropping the first, 6-3, before Epping claimed the third set, 6-1.
With the 6-1 victory, Brockport secured its third win of the season and improved to 2-1 in Empire 8 play.
