Brockport, NY — The women's tennis team will face a busy week of competition, playing three matches in five days. The Golden Eagles will host Hartwick College on Tuesday, September 22 at 4 p.m. before traveling to St. John Fisher University on Friday, September 25 at 4 p.m. and Brockport will then return home to close the week against Cortland on Saturday, September 26 at 1 p.m.
Last Week's Recap: Brockport enters the week with a 2-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in Empire 8 play. The Golden Eagles are already matching more than half of their total win production from last season — giving them an opportunity to build on one of their strongest starts in recent years. The Golden Eagles opened the weekend with a narrow 4-3 setback against Nazareth on Friday before bouncing back with a dominant 6-1 victory over Alfred on Saturday.
Against Alfred, Brockport secured two of three doubles matches, with Samantha Basovsky and Mackenzie Kingearning a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles and Gianna Masker and Kathleen Rogers posting a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. In singles, Brockport won five of six matches, highlighted by victories from Leah Banes, King, Basovsky, Masker and Katie Tabor. Basovsky battled to a three-set win at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, while Tabor earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
Scouting the Hawks: Hartwick enters Tuesday's matchup with a 1-3 overall record. The Hawks opened the season with losses to St. John Fisher, Baruch and Oneonta before earning their first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Russell Sage on September 11. Hartwick swept all three doubles matches and all six singles contests in the victory. Samantha Lantzy has been a key contributor for the Hawks, holding a 3-1 singles record and playing primarily at No. 1 singles. Lantzy also owns a 3-1 record alongside Gianna Leggieri at No. 1 doubles.
Scouting the Cardinals: St. John Fisher enters the week with a 4-2 record after victories over Hartwick, Utica, Fredonia and Russell Sage. The Cardinals' two losses came against Geneseo and Cortland, including a narrow 4-3 decision against Cortland on September 15. Fisher has another Empire 8 matchup against Nazareth on Wednesday before hosting Brockport on Friday. The Cardinals will provide a familiar matchup for Brockport, with Fisher having taken a 5-2 victory over Hartwick earlier this season and competing in several close matches throughout the fall.
Scouting the Red Dragons: Cortland comes to Brockport with a 4-3 overall record and a 0-2 mark in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons opened the season with a 7-0 loss to Geneseo but responded with three consecutive 7-0 victories over Houghton, Farmingdale State and Utica. Cortland then defeated St. John Fisher, 4-3, before dropping consecutive conference matches to Oswego, 5-2, and Oneonta, 4-3. Christina Massoni has been a key player at No. 1 singles for Cortland, while Reaghan Hughes and Alexandra Thuthave formed a strong doubles pairing. Hughes also earned a singles victory against Oneonta at No. 3 singles, while Thut won at No. 4.
Dominant Duo: Samantha Basovsky and Mackenzie King continue to stand out in doubles play. The freshman duo is 4-0 together at No. 2 doubles, including a 6-3 victory against Alfred, and both players are also 2-2 in singles this season.
Players to Watch: Katie Tabor enters the week with a perfect 4-0 singles record, including a 4-0 mark at No. 6 singles. Gianna Masker is also off to a strong start at 3-1 in singles, while the Masker/Rogers pairing is 3-1 at No. 3 doubles.
