BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The SUNY Brockport field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision against Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon at home. With the result, the Golden Eagles move to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in Empire 8 conference play.
The Golden Eagles' defense faced consistent pressure early from the Hawks' attack, with starter
Lauren Mastromarco turning away three first-half shots to keep Brockport well within striking distance. Hartwick managed to break through late in the second quarter, taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
Hartwick seized control in the third quarter with a three-goal surge to extend its lead.
Julia Nieboer came on in relief in goal for the Golden Eagles during the frame, stepping up to deliver four saves and stabilizing the defense down the stretch.
Brockport refused to go quietly, building momentum in the fourth quarter and pressing forward to create set-piece opportunities. The Golden Eagles earned three penalty corners in the final period, capped off in the 57th minute when
Alexis Penree capitalized on an opportunity to strike an unassisted goal and put Brockport on the board.
Penree paced the Brockport attack with two shots and a goal on the afternoon.

Penelope Schalck each registered shots as the Green and Gold continued to push until the final horn.
In net, Mastromarco finished with three saves in over 41 minutes of action before handing off to Nieboer, who stopped four of the five shots she faced over the final 18 minutes of play.
