Brockport, NY – The women's tennis team battled back from an early deficit to secure a 4-3 victory over Cortland on Saturday afternoon at the Brockport Tennis Courts.
The Golden Eagles opened the match by earning one of three doubles matches. Gianna Masker and Kathleen Rogers picked up a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles over Anneli Adams and Emma Morley. Cortland earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Brockport responded with a strong performance in singles, winning four of the six matches to claim the overall victory.
Mackenzie King provided one of the biggest wins of the afternoon at No. 3 singles. After dropping the second set, 6-1, King responded in the deciding set with a 6-4 victory over Reaghan Hughes after taking the opening set, 6-2.
Samantha Basovsky continued her strong afternoon with a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Anneli Adams, 6-1, 6-4. Masker followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles over Gracie Guiliano, while Katie Tabor completed the singles victories with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Emma Morley at No. 6.
Brockport also battled at the top of the singles lineup. Leah Banes pushed Gabriella Stanley to a third-set tiebreak at No. 2 singles after splitting the first two sets. Banes took the second set, 7-6, before Stanley secured the deciding set, 10-8. At No. 1 singles, Cara Vasile fell to Cortland's Christina Massoni, 6-1, 6-4.
The Golden Eagles improve to 4-4 overall with the victory, while Cortland falls to 4-4 on the season.
Coming Up – Brockport will return to action on Tuesday, September 29th, when the Golden Eagles travel to Geneseo for a 4 p.m. Empire 8 matchup.
