Kelly Nowak (Orchard Park, NY/Sacred Heart) delivered 21 kills in a 3-1 victory over D'Youville College Saturday leading The College at Brockport Volleyball team to a second place finish at the Oswego Invitational Friday and Saturday in Oswego.
Potsdam took first place as a result of a 3-0 win over Brockport. The Golden Eagles were second and D'Youville was third. SUNYIT was fourth, Canton was fifth, Morrisville sixth, Alfred University seventh, Oswego eighth and Utica College ninth in the weekend tournament.
On Saturday, Brockport handed D'Youville a 3-1 loss with set scores of 21-25, 25-12, 25-12, 25-21 before Brockport fell in three sets to Potsdam by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-16.
On Friday, Brockport defeated both Canton and Utica College by 3-0 scores. The Golden Eagles beat Utica25-13, 25-21 and 25-13 before handing Canton a straight sets loss by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-18.
Against Utica,
Kelly Nowak (Orchard Park, NY/Sacred Heart) led Brockport with 12 kills while
Alex Stribing (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and
Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) had seven kills each.
Sarah Zelko (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) had 26 assists and Nowak,
Alexis Kwiatkowski (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Jaime Snyder (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) all had six digs apiece for the Golden Eagles.
In the Canton match, Nowak registered nine kills, eight aces and nine digs while Zelko had 20 assists and
Mary Cocking (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) had 10 digs.
“Serving was certainly the key for us Friday,” said head coach Kelly Greapentrog. “We had some big aces in both matches and the aggressive serving was a big reason we won both matches on Friday.”
On Saturday, Nowak led Brockport with 21 kills against D'Youville while Jones added nine kills, Stribing chipped in seven kills and nine digs and Zelko was credited with 43 assists and four aces.
In the Potsdam match, Stribing had 10 kills, Nowak had nine kills while Cocking recorded four aces and 10 digs.
