Freshman Lance Legister (Staten Island, NY/Millbrook) drained a long jumper with less than two seconds left in overtime but the shot was ruled a two-point basket and The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team dropped a heart-breaking 82-81 decision to St. John Fisher Tuesday night in the Manning & Napier Gymnasium at St. John Fisher.
St. John Fisher (2-2) took the three-point lead hitting 1-of-2 free throws with less than seven seconds on the clock. After making the second free throw, Brockport inbounded the ball and moved up the court quickly getting the ball to the freshman near the three-point line in front of the Brockport (0-3) bench. Legister hit the shot and the Brockport players began to celebrate until realizing the officials had ruled the shot a two-pointer ending the game.
Sophomore John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) had hit a pair of free throws near the end of regulation to tie the score at 73-73. The Cardinals missed a short jumper at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
After St. John Fisher hit a jumper to open the overtime period, Ivy grabbed a defensive rebound and drove the length of the court down the lane for a lay up to knot the score. The teams traded jumpers over the next two minutes and with a two-point lead and less than a minute to play Brockport was forced to foul to stop the clock. The Cardinals hit both free throws to take an 81-77 lead. Ivy drove the lane again and hit a running jumper to pull Brockport to within two at 81-79.
The Cardinals missed a jumper at the other end of the court but Brockport missed a three-point attempt with 10 seconds left and had to foul again to stop the clock setting up the Cardinal's final free throw to take the three-point lead.
Brockport came back from a six-point deficit late in the second half as Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a short jumper to cut the lead to 73-69. On the defensive end of the court, Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) and Donnell Jackson (Rochester, NY/Edison) used a double-team on the Cardinal point guard to force the turnover and Jackson sailed in for the fast break dunk to cut the lead to two at 73-71.
After St. John Fisher missed a pair of free throws, Ivy drove the lane on the fast break and was fouled sending him to the line to hit both free throws to tie the game.
Ivy finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Green led Brockport with 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Williams scored 14 points and Jackson added 13 for the Golden Eagles.
