BOXSCORE

Offense, defense, transition game, three-pointers. Whatever The College at Brockport's men's basketball team tried, it worked during Tuesday night's 69-44 win over Fredonia inside the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

Junior Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) scored 20 points on 6 of 11 shooting, including hitting 5 of 7 three-pointers, as the College at Brockport's (9-9 overall, 7-4 SUNYAC) men's basketball team won its second straight game.

Freshman Jon Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) added 13 points and made 7 of his 8 free throws for the Golden Eagles. The 44 points was the fewest allowed by Brockport since a 68-43 road win over Geneseo, Jan. 5, 2010.

“We tried to come out with great intensity on defense from the start, and we did that tonight,” said Williams, who recorded his sixth 20-point performance in the last eight games.

“We came out with a chip on our shoulders from the last time we played Fredonia (an 82-68 loss Jan. 18), so we came out and executed, and when we execute, this is the type of results we can get.”

Brockport shot 43 percent in the first half, hitting on 12 of its 28 shots, including going 7 for 16 on three-pointers.

Junior Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) finished the half a perfect 3 for 3 from the field and made his only three-pointer en route to eight first-half points. Sophomore Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) made both of his '3s' in the half while Williams connected on 3 of 4 three-point attempts and finished with nine first-half points.

“Gerald, he shot the ball well, which I expect him to do,” said Greg Dunne, Brockport's fourth-year head coach.

“He's one of the best shooters if not the best shooter in the conference, and if he's got an open look and they keep letting him get off open '3s' like that, we're pretty confident they're going in.”

Brockport's attacking defense caused 14 first-half Fredonia (5-13, 2-10 SUNYAC) turnovers as the Golden Eagles took a 36-17 lead into halftime.

It marked the fewest points Brockport has allowed in a half since Nov. 21, 2009, when the Golden Eagles limited Green Mountain College to 16 second-half points during a 63-50 win in the second round of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the University of Rochester.

“It's all about our energy level. We tweaked a couple of things (from the last meeting with Fredonia), but these guys came out focused and ready to go,” Dunne said.

“They (Fredonia) do a real good job, they run a lot of Princeton sets in their offense, high shuffle cuts off the top guy at the post. We just wanted to make sure we were staying in front, making sure the cutters cut behind us and then we were jamming their cutters every chance we got.”

Brockport kept up the pace to start the second half and used a 15-4 run to take a 51-21 lead. Williams buried both three-point attempts and made three free throws to spark the Golden Eagle run.

The Brockport lead surged to 35, 59-24 and got as high as 37 points on two separate occasions later in the second half, the last coming when Klein hit a jumper to take a 67-30 lead with 8:11 to play.

With the win, Brockport is now in sole possession of third place in the SUNYAC.

The Golden Eagles return to action with a pair of SUNYAC games this weekend. Brockport hosts Plattsburgh at 8 p.m. Friday night before taking on Potsdam at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Both games will occur in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
