Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) led Brockport to a first half lead with 15 of his game-high 28 points, but The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team watched the lead slip away as Oneonta came back to post a 76-68 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory Saturday at Dewar Arena in Oneonta.
Despite the loss, Brockport (12-10 Overall, 10-5 SUNYAC) clinched a home court game in the first round of the conference tournament that will begin Tuesday, February 23. The Golden Eagles cannot finish below fourth place in the final conference standings and will host one of the four first round contests at Jim and John Vlogianitis Gym in Brockport with a 7 pm game. The Golden Eagles can finish as high as second place in the final standings.
Williams finished with 28 points for Brockport on 6-of-13 shooting from three-point range, and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. The 28 points raised his scoring average to 23.6 points per game in the last five games.
Two other Golden Eagles scored in double figures, as freshman Jon Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) and senior
Zack McTigue (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) both scored 11 points. McTigue shot 5-of-7 from the field.
Williams led Brockport in the first half, scoring 15 points in the frame for the Golden Eagles, shooting 5-of-10 from the field and connecting on three 3-pointers. Sophomore
Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) gave Brockport a nine-point lead at 35-26 with two late free throws just before the halftime intermission.
In the second half, junior
Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt-Whitman) left the game with an injury at the 17:25 mark of the period and did not return to the game. Green, who averages nearly 17 points per game, scored four points for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport was able to hold onto the lead until the 14:24 mark of the second half, when Oneonta (8-15, 7-9) used an 11-0 run to take the lead for good.
Brockport's offense rallied late in the second half as the Golden Eagles cut the lead to eight, but Oneonta finished off the game at the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles will take the court at the Jim and John Vlogianitis gymnasium against Buffalo State at 8 pm Tuesday for senior night.
