BOXSCORE
Junior
Kyheem Green (
Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) scored 26 points and collected 10 rebounds as The College at Brockport's men's basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Potsdam with a convincing 86-69 win Saturday afternoon inside the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Green scored eight points and junior
Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) added seven points as Brockport (11-9 overall, 9-4 SUNYAC) bolted to a 19-0 lead to start the game. Potsdam did not score for the first 8:57 of the game, collecting its first points off of a layup at the 11:13 mark of the first half.
“We came out flat when we went to their place,” Green said of the team's motivation to start fast Saturday. “They (Potsdam) really took it to us (during the 74-60 loss Jan. 7). We knew that we had to come out and play aggressively today.”
Green shot 10 of 13 from the field and made 8 of 10 at the free-throw line. Besides registering his ninth double-double of the year, Green added six blocks and two steals.
A day after setting a career-high with 30 points in a win over Plattsburgh, Williams finished with 26 points, the eighth time in 10 games he's scored 20-plus points. The sharp-shooting Williams made 4 of 7 three-pointers and made 8 of his 10 free throws. Over his last three games, Williams is shooting 70 percent (14 for 20) from three-point range.
On Monday, Williams was honored by the SUNYAC as its Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Brockport, which sits in third place in the SUNYAC, has won five of their last seven conference games. The Golden Eagles have also won their last four games by an average of 18.25 points.
Freshman Jon Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) scored 16 points, shooting 5 of 6 from the field, going 2 for 2 on three-pointers and making all four of his free throw attempts.
After jumping out to their 19-0 lead early in the first, Brockport led by as many as 22 when senior
Francisco Lantigua (
Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) buried a jumper. At halftime, Brockport led 40-18.
“We came out with a really high level of energy that they weren't able to match,”
Greg Dunne, Brockport's fourth-year head coach, said after the game.
“They (Potsdam) really struggled to score, our energy was great on the defensive end and that led to some easy baskets.”
In the second half, the Golden Eagles improved their lead to 28 after a Green “3” with 11:22 left in the game pushed the advantage to 63-35.
With the win, Brockport remains one game behind Plattsburgh for the second-seed in the SUNYAC. Brockport swept the regular season series against Plattsburgh for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
Brockport hits the road for an 8 p.m. game in New Paltz Friday night and a 2 p.m. clash at Oswego Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles return home to the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium for a Senior Night showdown with Buffalo State at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 15th.
