Kelly Nowak (Orchard Park, NY/Sacred Heart) recorded 28 kills and moved to seventh on The College at Brockport's career kills list on Friday, and the Golden Eagles went 1-1 on the first day of SUNYAC Pool Play at Buffalo State.
In the day's first match, the Golden Eagles surrendered the first two sets with scores of 25-18 and 26-24 to Fredonia, before winning the third set 25-22. They were unable to carry momentum into the fourth set, and they fell to the Blue Devils 25-12.
Nowak registered 16 kills in the match. Junior
Mary Cocking (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) led Brockport in digs with 15, and fellow junior
Sarah Zelko (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) paced the team with 35 assists. Freshman Jessica Senek (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) also chipped in seven kills of her own.
In Brockport's second match of the day, the Golden Eagles defeated Oswego in three sets. Nowak led the team in kills once again, finishing with 12.
The Golden Eagles won by the scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-18. Cocking and junior
Alex Stribing (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) combined for 25 digs in the match, and freshman
Jaime Snyder (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) tacked on six kills against the Lakers.
"We played well at times against Fredonia and chances to win both the second and third sets," said head coach Kelly Greapentrog. "I was impressed at the way Jaime (Snyder) and Jessica (Senek) stepped up for us in their first conference pool play action."
Brockport moves to 6-11 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC West.
In the second day of pool play on Saturday, the Golden Eagles play Buffalo State and Geneseo 10 am and noon, respectively.
