Junior Kasey Schreiner (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made 11 saves and defensive unit for The College at Brockport Field Hockey team held Springfield College scoreless for nearly the entire game as the Golden Eagles posted a 3-2 win Sunday in Springfield, MA to remain undefeated on the season.
Brockport (2-0) was out shot in the games and defended 19 penalty corners but the tough defensive effort was the difference as the Golden Eagles built a 3-0 lead with two goals in the first half and another goal in the second half. Springfield (0-1) scored twice in the final 5:30 of the game to cut the lead to a single goal but Brockport held on the for the 3-2 victory.
“It was a great combined defensive effort today led by Kasey (Schreiner),” said head coach Andrea Zurlo. Kasey had an amazing effort and Gina (Stephan) made two nice defensive saves but everyone played great defense.”
In the first half, senior Kelly-Ann Henry (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) opened the scoring with a breakaway goal 19 minutes into the contest. Later in the half, at the 32:13 mark, Taryn Rossi (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) scored her first goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Danielle Henck (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) to give Brockprot a 2-0 lead.
With 16 minutes elapsed in the second half, sophomore Madison Buckley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored her team-leading third goal of the season with an assist from freshman Abby Eschen (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) to push the lead to 3-0.
Late in the second half, Springfield scored twice on rebounded shots from close range in the span of 1:17 to trim the lead but the Brockport defense regrouped and held on for the victory.
