Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) shot 63 percent from the floor, including 66 percent from three-point range to finish with a team-high 19 points, but The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team dropped a close conference matchup to Cortland, 73-66. The Golden Eagles fall to 4-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference and the Red Dragons improve to 7-3.
Williams scored nine points in the first half, including a three-point shot that put the Golden Eagles up by six with just over nine minutes to play in the first half.
Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) collected eight rebounds in the first half and also chipped in six points before intermission. Brockport's largest lead of the half came at the 8:41 mark as Green converted a layup to make the score 23-15. Cortland kept the game interesting over the remainder of the period and eventually took the lead into halftime, 33-32.
Williams came out firing to open the second half as he connected on three straight three-point attempts in a 1:30 span to put the Golden Eagles up 43-39. For the next 9:34, the two teams traded leads on three separate occasions and were caught in a tie four times. At the 7:27 mark, Jesse Winter hit a layup to give Cortland the edge, 59-57. Winter led all scorers with 26 points.
Cortland built their lead up to five over the next four minutes as Brockport struggled offensively for the remainder of the game, hitting just three field goals over the final 7:30 of the game as Cortland stole the conference battle.
Brockport out-rebounded the Red Dragons 43-37. Green finished with a game-high 16 rebounds, his second highest total of the season. Green also added 13 total points to the game.
Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) shot 3-4 from three-point range and finished with 11 points. As a whole, Brockport connected on eight three point attempts, tied for their second-highest total of the season.
Brockport will entertain the Geneseo Blue Knights on Saturday night at 8:00 pm for another conference matchup at the John and Jim Vlogianitis Gym. The Knights are currently in fourth place in the conference standings at 6-4 while Brockport is in fifth place, tied with Fredonia State.
