Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) was one of four players to reach double figures as The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team pulled out a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup against Geneseo Saturday night at Brockport, 71-67. The Golden Eagles conference record improves to 5-5 as Brockport enters the final stretch of SUNYAC play.
Green finished the game with 19 points, including 11 in the second half. Green shot 9-14 from the floor and grabbed a team-high four steals. Also joining Green in double figures was
John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) with 14,
Lance Legister (Staten Island, NY/Milbrook School) with 12 and
Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) with 10, including three three-point shots.
The Golden Eagles, who lost at Geneseo on Jan. 17 by one point, came out firing to open the game. Brockport jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead, including six points from Green. The Blue Knights came back with their own 20-6 run to give Geneseo a 20-17 advantage with 7:37 to play. Both teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the half, but it was Brockport who took the lead into halftime, 33-29.
Brockport maintained their lead for a steady period of play to open the second half. The Golden Eagles held the lead for the entire second period of play. For every big Brockport shot, Geneseo kept hanging around with their own answer. Brockport built their lead to seven with 16:51 to play on a three point shot by
Stephen Sisson (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) who was making his first start of the season. Geneseo kept hanging around, forcing a tie on two separate occasions over the next 11 minutes.
With the score all square at 60 with 3:42 remaining, Klein sank a three-point shot on an assist from Sisson to give the game its' final lead change.
Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) sank his only shot of the night, a from three-ball to make the score 68-62 with just under two minutes remaining and Brockport came out with the victory. Sisson tied his season-high with seven points.
Brockport forced 20 Geneseo turnovers and grabbed a season-high 13 steals. Ivy, Klein, and Legister all recorded two steals apiece. The Golden Eagles shot 78.3 percent from the free-throw line, their third best mark of the season.
The Golden Eagles return to SUNYAC play on Tuesday, Jan. 31 against Oswego as Brockport tries to avenge a loss to the Lakers earlier this year. Oswego sits in first place in the SUNYAC with an unblemished 11-0 record. Including the Oswego game, Brockport has eight conference contests remaining.
