The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team fell to St. John Fisher 85-72 in the first round of the Wendy's College Classic on Wednesday night.
Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) scored 14 points, hitting three three-point shots to lead the Golden Eagles.
Brockport made a late run in the first half and held a lead early in the second half, but the Cardinals hit 17 of 29 shots in the final 20 minutes to cruise to the victory.
The Golden Eagles got off to a cold start on the night, hitting just one of their first nine attempts from the floor. Trailing 8-2,
Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenedehowa) sparked an 8-0 run for Brockport, converting on three consecutive possessions. Both team's managed to keep the score close over the next few possessions until St. John Fisher began to pull away. The Cardinals built their lead to as large as 15 in the first half.
Trailing 33-18 with just over three minutes to play, Brockport put together a run of its own. The Golden Eagles scored on six straight possessions, including four threes, two coming from Lee. The junior finished a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc in the first half as the Golden Eagles went into halftime trailing by just two, 36-34. As a team, the Golden Eagles hit six of 12 from three-point range.
Bell scored five straight points to open the second half for Brockport as the Golden Eagles took its first lead since the 12:11 mark of the first half.
Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) converted a four-point play followed by a three-point shot on the next trip down court to give Brockport a 48-44 lead.
The Cardinals regained control of the game, using an array of shots to score 16 of the game's next 18 points. Major and
Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) connected on three-point baskets to cut into the deficit, but St. John Fisher was able to maintain a double-digit lead for the final 9:09 of the game.
John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) scored 13 points for the Golden Eagles while Lee finished with 11 and Major chipped in 10. As a team, the Golden Eagles hit 13 of 27 three-point shots, the most in a single-game since Brockport hit 14 against New Paltz during the 2009-10 season.
Brockport and R.I.T. will square off at Geneseo on Friday after the Tigers fell to the University of Rochester 66-60. Brockport and R.I.T. last met in the Wendy's Classic in 2010 with the Golden Eagles pulling out a 54-50 victory. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
