A late three-point play from Oswego's top scorer dropped The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team on Tuesday night as the Lakers stole an 81-80 victory in the closing seconds of a back-and-forth struggle. John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) paced the Golden Eagles for the second straight game, scoring a game-high 29 points.

In Brockport's opening State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest, the Golden Eagles held an 80-78 lead with 15 seconds to play. Oswego managed to cause a Brockport turnover on the inbound pass underneath its own basket. On the ensuing inbounds, Hayden Ward received a pass and converted the layup and was fouled on the play.

Ward's free-throw put Oswego up one with 10 seconds to play, setting up a final opportunity for the Golden Eagles. A turnover in Brockport's offensive zone gave the ball back to Oswego, only to see Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) steal the inbound pass and heave a desperation half-court three at the buzzer, falling just wide of the rim.

Ivy and Ward carried their respective teams, trading baskets throughout the contest. Ivy, who scored 30 points in his previous contest against Roberts Wesleyan, shot 10-16 from the floor, including 4-5 from three-point range. Ivy hit three treys in a three minute span in the first half. As a team, the Golden Eagles hit 14 trifectas on the night, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc.

Brockport started off the game on fire from three-point range as the Golden Eagles held an early lead. Brockport hit its first three shots from beyond the arc, including the first two from Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) and one from Bell.

Ivy entered the game at the 15:10 mark of the first half and after a slow start, joined the shooting spree. The junior guard hit four consecutive shots, including three straight threes to put Brockport up 25-21 with 8:41 to play. Oswego hung around but the hot shooting found the hands of Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran). The senior hit two straight from beyond the arc as Brockport was able to maintain its lead up until the final minutes of the first half.

The Lakers grabbed a late lead before intermission and went into the locker room with a 44-38 advantage. Brockport finished the first half shooting 9-17 from three-point range.

Bell opened up the second half with a quick move underneath the basket for two points and Ivy's hot hand continued, hitting a three to bring Brockport within three. Oswego was able to maintain a slim lead throughout much of the second half until Ivy converted a three-point play of his own to finally regain the lead for Brockport at 60-59. Ivy scored seven points in a row for the Golden Eagles as both teams traded leads.

Bell sank another three and Ivy hit a jumper just outside the paint to keep Brockport up two, but the Lakers managed to keep things interesting.

Trailing 78-74, Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) sank two free-throws for Brockport. On the next possession, Bell forced a turnover on Ward and was fouled. Bell was able to tie the game after sinking both from the charity stripe with 1:21 to play. Brockport forced a missed three from Oswego and regained possession. Klein found Ivy streaking across the lane who in turn nailed a 15-foot jumpshot over the outstretched arms of Ward and put Brockport up 80-78

The Golden Eagles held the lead until Ward was able to hit the game-winning free-throw after being fouled on the layup attempt.

Klein and Bell each finished with 12 points on the night. All 12 of Klein's points came from beyond the arc. Brockport finished 14-28 from three-point range and have now hit at least eight threes in its last four games. Where Brockport succeeded from three, they struggled in the paint as the Lakers managed to outscore the Golden Eagles 48-14 down low.

In all, the game totaled 24 lead changes and 12 ties.

Brockport returns to SUNYAC action this weekend as the Golden Eagles travel to New Paltz on Friday for an 8:00 pm matchup. Brockport will head to Oneonta on Saturday for a 4:00 pm start.
