Second Half Surge Carries Brockport Past Fredonia

The Golden Eagles drop Fredonia 85-64 in SUNYAC play

50 second half points carried The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team as the Golden Eagles defeated Fredonia State 85-64 on Tuesday night at Steele Hall. With the win, Brockport improves to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

Brockport used five three-point shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half to dominate the Blue Devils. Brockport led 35-34 at halftime but used a strong shooting performance in the final 20 minutes to take the conference win. The Golden Eagles have now won four straight against Fredonia and 11 of the last 12 matchups.

Both sides played a tight game in the first half as neither team led by more than five. Lance Legister (Staten Island, NY/Millbrook School) gave Brockport a 19-14 lead at the 9:31 mark of the first half. Fredonia took a 30-28 lead with 3:05 remaining and held the advantage until the final second of the half. Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a layup as time expired to regain the lead for Brockport, 35-34.

The Golden Eagles came out running to open the second half, scoring six straight points to pull ahead. The Blue Devils brought the game to within three, but Brockport's defensive pressure proved to be too much for the Blue Devils. Brockport forced four turnovers in the opening minutes of the half and finished the game with 20 caused turnovers.

Major connected on three three-point shots to pace Brockport with 15 points on the night. Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) hit two from long range and finished with 14 points while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.  John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) and Legister each contributed 12 points while Mike Gallagher (Schenectady, NY/Notre-Dame Bishop Gibbons) chipped in 10.

As a team, Brockport hit nine shots from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles shot 54.4 percent from the floor, their second highest percentage this year.

The Golden Eagles will stay on the road for their next matchup, taking on the Oswego Lakers at 8:00 pm on Friday night. Brockport will host Cortland at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium on Saturday at 8:00 pm.
