The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team dropped a high-scoring affair against the Cortland Red Dragons as the Golden Eagles fell in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action 102-83.
John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) scored 25 points in a losing effort.
The two SUNYAC rivals lit up the scoreboard at the Jim and John Vlogianitis as Cortland improved to 5-3 in conference play while Brockport dropped to 4-5. The two teams combined for 97 first half points as Cortland held a slim 49-48 lead at the intermission. The Red Dragons led late but Ivy hit two free throws to cut Cortland's lead to 76-72. Cortland went on a quick 10-2 run as Brockport managed just eight points in the final 4:31 of play.
Brockport got off to a strong start in the first half as the Golden Eagles shot 54.5 percent (18-33) from the floor in the first 20 minutes. A key facet of the Golden Eagle offense was the three-point shot. Brockport hit eight threes in the first half, including a perfect 3-3 from
Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa).
Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) put Brockport up 6-0 to start the game with back-to-back three-point shots.
The Golden Eagles placed eight players in the scoring column in the first half, led by Lee's nine points. Cortland matched Brockport's hot shooting as the Red Dragons hit 61.3 percent before intermission, including 5-10 from beyond the arc. Brockport trailed 49-48 entering halftime.
Brockport traded leads with the Red Dragons for the opening of the second half. Ivy hit a layup with 14:05 to play to give the Golden Eagles a 64-61 lead. Cortland regained the lead with just under 13 to play and managed to slowly build its advantage to double digits with 6:24 remaining. The Red Dragons cruised the remainder of the way to take the SUNYAC win.
The Golden Eagles finished shooting 47.5 percent for the game but hit just three three-point shots in the second half. Lee finished the game with 10 points while
Lance Legister (Staten Island, NY/Millbrook School) shot 5-7 from the floor and finished with 13 points.
Brockport will host Buffalo State on Jan. 22 as the Golden Eagles take on the Bengals in SUNYAC action. Game time is set for 8:00 pm.
