Brockport Edged in Overtime Thriller at Cortland

Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) hit a 35-foot three-pointer at the end of regulation to send The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team into overtime with the Cortland Red Dragons, but the Golden Eagles fell in the extra session 85-75. Brockport falls to 7-6 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

Brockport trailed 62-54 with just over two minutes to play until Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) sank a three-point shot to cut into the deficit.  Caruthers and former high school teammate Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) hit back-to-back layups as Brockport trailed by just one. The Red Dragons sank two free throws with six seconds on the clock to take the three-point lead.

On the ensuing inbounds, Caruthers drove the length of the court. The junior was double-teamed but found a hole and heaved the last-second shot to force overtime. Cortland took the early lead in overtime and hit 14-16 free throws down the stretch to secure the conference victory.

Caruthers finished with a Brockport career-high of 24 points on 10-20 shooting and grabbed four steals. John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) scored a game-high 27 points to move into 18th all-time on the Brockport career scoring list. Ivy also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Lee scored seven points and dished out six assists while committing zero turnovers.

Brockport put itself in overtime after making a monumental comeback. The Red Dragons shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and outrebounded the Golden Eagles 26-9 through 20 minutes of play. Cortland went on a 7-0 run to end the first half and went into the locker room with its largest lead of the half, 36-20.

Cortland opened the second half with a three-point shot to take a 19-point advantage. Ivy kept the Golden Eagles in contention, scoring six of the team's first eight points in the opening minutes. Ivy sank a three-point shot at the 9:29 mark to bring the deficit to single digits, 53-44. The three was Ivy's fourth consecutive make from beyond the arc. Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) converted a fast-break layup to put Brockport down three with under eight to play.

The Red Dragons built their lead back up to nine before the three teammates from East High School- Ivy, Caruthers and Bell, brought Brockport back into the game. The three scored 10 of the final 13 points, including Caruthers' buzzer-beater, and caused two critical turnovers.

Caruthers gave Brockport a 66-65 lead in the first minute of play in the five minute extra session, but the Red Dragons took advantage of their time at the charity stripe to seal the overtime win.

The Golden Eagles found their hot hand in the second half from all areas of the floor. Brockport hit 55.2 percent of its shots in the second half, including 8-16 from beyond the arc. Brockport was outrebounded 48-26 but caused 23 Red Dragon turnovers, the most caused miscues in its last eight games. The Golden Eagles committed just 10 turnovers on the night.

Brockport will travel to Geneseo on Feb. 2 for a 8:00 pm SUNYAC matchup against the Knights.
